Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Three months later.

The federal courthouse was packed to maximum capacity. The gallery was filled with journalists, corporate executives, and citizens who had followed every twist and turn of the "Apex Development Scandal" on social media and international news.

I sat at the prosecutor’s table, wearing a crisp, flawless white suit. My ribs had healed, the bruises were completely gone, and my eyes were bright with a newfound, unshakable strength. Beside me sat Liam, completely recovered, and Chloe Henderson.

Across the courtroom, sitting in the defendant's box behind a reinforced glass partition, was Ethan Vance.

The transformation was shocking. The billionaire tycoon was gone. He wore an orange prison jumpsuit, his hair closely shaved, his face pale and sunken from ninety days in a maximum-security holding facility. The judge had denied him bail permanently, classifying him as an extreme flight risk and a danger to society.

Behind him sat Marcus Croft and Victor Vance, both dressed in matching prison attire, their international financial empire completely dismantled.

The honorable Judge Katherine Vance (no relation, to Ethan’s great misfortune) cleared her throat, her gavel striking the wooden block with a sound that demanded absolute silence.

"We have reviewed the extensive, unprecedented volume of evidence presented by the prosecution," the Judge began, her voice echoing through the courtroom. "In my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely witnessed a case of such systematic, malicious corporate corruption, combined with such a brutal, calculated campaign of domestic terror against an innocent spouse."

She looked down over her glasses at Ethan, her expression filled with profound disgust.

"Mr. Ethan Vance, you believed your wealth, your political connections, and your social standing placed you above the law. You believed you could treat your wife as a possession, abuse her with impunity, and silence her voice through terror. You were wrong."

The judge turned the page of her sentencing document.

"For the charges of attempted second-degree murder, aggravated domestic assault, corporate fraud, political bribery, and domestic terrorism via the sabotage of a medical facility... I sentence you, Ethan Vance, to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be served at the Florence Federal Penitentiary."

A loud gasp erupted from the gallery. Flashbulbs went off rapidly as reporters scrambled to write their headlines.

Ethan slammed his hands against the glass partition, his face twisting into that familiar, ugly mask of rage. "You can't do this! I am Ethan Vance! I built this city! Ava! Look at me! You destroyed me! You ruined my life!"

The guards immediately grabbed him, forcing his arms behind his back and dragging him through the secure side door. As he was pulled away into the dark tunnel leading to the prison transport, I stood up and looked him dead in the eye one last time.

I didn't say a word. I didn't need to. The silence of his cell would be his punishment for the rest of his days.

The judge turned her attention back to the courtroom. "Furthermore, regarding the legal status of Apex Development and the associated assets... the court recognizes Mrs. Ava Vance as the sole, legitimate majority shareholder and trustee. All frozen corporate reserve funds, totaling $150 million, are hereby released entirely to her control."

Chloe Henderson turned to me with a massive smile, throwing her arms around me. "You did it, Ava. Total victory."

I looked at Liam, who was smiling through tears of joy. For three years, I had been a victim hidden in the shadows. Today, the world knew the truth.
