Chapter 8 - The Power of Truth

I backed up until my spine pressed against the cold glass window of the fourth-floor hospital room. Outside, through the smoke, the flashing red and blue lights of fifty police cars illuminated the night sky. The sirens were deafening, but inside this room, the only sound was Ethan’s heavy, ragged breathing.
He raised the crowbar one final time.
I didn't cower. I didn't close my eyes. I looked straight into the face of the man who had terrorized me for three long years, and for the first time in my life, I felt absolutely no fear. I felt only an overwhelming, clean, beautiful sense of clarity.
"Go ahead, Ethan," I said, my voice dead calm, echoing with an authority that made him hesitate for a fraction of a second. "Strike me down. Kill me right here."
"You think I won't?" he growled.
"I know you will," I said, pointing a shaking finger toward the corner of the ceiling. "But look up."
Ethan blinked, his eyes tracking upward. In the pulsing red light of the emergency fire system, a tiny, glowing green light was visible on the wall. It wasn't part of the hospital equipment. It was a standalone, battery-powered security camera Liam had installed the day I arrived, wired to a completely independent cloud server.
"The power grid is down, Ethan, but that camera is running on an internal lithium battery," I whispered, a cold smile touching my lips. "Every word you just said... your confession... your assault on Liam... your attempt on my life... it’s broadcasting live right now to the federal tactical team outside this building. It’s being recorded on a server you can never touch."
Ethan’s face twisted in horror. He looked at the camera, then back at me, realizing the absolute finality of his defeat. Even in the darkness, even with a weapon in his hand, he had walked directly into another perfectly designed trap.
"You... you setup a trap..." he stammered, the crowbar beginning to shake in his hand.
"I didn't set a trap, Ethan. I just let your own arrogance guide you to your destruction," I said.
Before he could make a decision, the heavy drywall next to the door exploded inward.
A federal SWAT team, led by Detective Miller, swarmed into the room. "FBI! Drop the weapon! Drop it now or we will open fire!"
Ethan spun around, raising the crowbar toward the officers in a final, suicidal gesture of defiance.
BANG!
A single, non-lethal rubber-coated tactical round struck Ethan square in the chest, knocking the wind out of him and throwing him backward against the bed. Before he could recover, four heavy tactical officers slammed him into the floor, pinning his limbs, wrenching his arms behind his back, and clicking the heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
"Ava Vance," Detective Miller said, stepping over the debris and throwing a warm tactical blanket around my shoulders. "It's over. We have him. And we have the full broadcast recording. He’s going away for a very, very long time."
I didn't look at Ethan as they dragged him out of the room, screaming curses, his face covered in tears of rage and humiliation. I dropped to my knees beside Liam, crying tears of relief as my brother slowly opened his eyes, groaning but alive.

"Did... did we get him?" Liam muttered, holding his bruised head.
"We got him, Liam," I wept, hugging my brother tightly. "We got all of them."
