Chapter 4 - The Country Club Siege

The Lakefront Country Club was the pinnacle of Chicago’s old-money society. High crystal chandeliers hung from vaulted mahogany ceilings, illuminating tables covered in white linen, silver cutlery, and champagne buckets.
Inside the private dining room on the second floor, Julian Vance sat at the head of a long table, surrounded by six prominent city investors, laughing loudly as he raised his glass of champagne.
"To opportunity!" Julian toasted, his golden hair perfectly styled, his teeth gleaming under the warm chandelier light. "When small-time idiots like Ethan Sterling crash and burn, smart men step in and pick up the pieces for pennies on the dollar!"
"Is that what you call extortion, Julian? Opportunity?"
The deep, calm voice cut through the laughter in the private dining room like a thrown dagger.
Julian’s glass froze halfway to his lips.
The double doors of the dining room swung open. I walked inside, flanked by Victor on my left and two uniformed private investigators on my right. I wore a tailored navy-blue trench coat, my hair pulled back into a slick, professional bun, my posture radiating cold, unshakeable power.
The six city investors around the table blinked in surprise, looking between me and Julian.
"Clara?" Julian stammered, quickly setting his glass down, a nervous chuckle escaping his throat. "What... what are you doing here? This is a private board dinner."
"It was a private board dinner, Julian," I corrected, walking slowly up to the foot of the table, resting my black-gloved hands against the back of an empty chair. "Until ten minutes ago, when Vance International acquired eighty percent of the commercial debt holding this country club’s mortgage."
Julian’s face drained of color. "What are you talking about?"
"Gentlemen," I said, addressing the six wealthy investors seated around the table. "I suggest you check your phones. In the last fifteen minutes, Sterling Global Wealth has frozen every joint venture account linked to Julian Vance’s holding company due to an ongoing federal fraud investigation."
Instantly, six smartphones on the table began buzzing furiously.
The men picked up their devices, their eyes widening in shock as they read the urgent push notifications and emails from their primary banks.
"My God, Julian!" one of the investors gasped, standing up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor. "My firm’s credit line just got canceled! What the hell did you drag us into?!"
"Julian, you said this deal was clean!" another investor yelled, scrambling to gather his papers. "We’re out! Cancel the wire transfers!"
Within two minutes, all six investors had vacated the room, leaving Julian standing alone at the head of the long table, looking like a cornered animal.
"You bitch," Julian hissed, his cultured facade completely shattering as he glared at me with pure venom. "You think you can come in here and ruin my deals?! You were nothing! You were Ethan’s quiet little house-mouse! You let him slap you around for three years!"
Victor took two sudden steps forward, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles popped like gunshots. "Say that again, Julian. I dare you."
I raised a hand, stopping Victor in his tracks.
"Let him talk, Victor," I said smoothly, pulling a thin leather portfolio from my coat and tossing it onto the table in front of Julian. "Open it, Julian."
Julian hesitated, his hands trembling slightly as he opened the leather cover. Inside were thirty pages of bank transfers, offshore shell company registries, and internal emails detailing how he had supplied Ethan with illegal whiskey shipments, offshore accounts, and instructions on how to hide money from my trust.
"This is... this is inadmissible," Julian stammered, sweat breaking out across his forehead. "You obtained this illegally!"
"I obtained it through a court-ordered subpoena issued two hours ago by the Federal District Court," I corrected flatly. "You see, Julian, when Ethan was arrested this morning, he didn't hesitate for a single second to save his own skin. He gave the prosecutors every text message, every email, and every wire confirmation you ever sent him."
Julian dropped the portfolio as if it had caught fire. "Ethan... that pathetic little coward..."
"He’s a coward, yes," I agreed, walking closer until I was standing right across the table from him. "But so are you. You thought because I wanted a quiet life away from the family drama, I had forgotten how to fight. You thought you could use a domestic abuser to strip my wealth away."
I leaned over the table, looking straight into his terrified blue eyes.
"By four o'clock today, the federal marshals will be serving an arrest warrant at your home in Evanston," I whispered softly. "Every asset you own has been frozen. You are broke, Julian. And you will spend the next twenty years sharing a cell block with the idiot you tried to manipulate."
May you like
Julian sank down into his chair, his head collapsing into his hands as he let out a broken, pathetic sob.
I turned on my heel, my coat flaring around my boots, and walked out of the room without looking back once.
