Chapter 2 - The Sound of the Wire

"Officers, take him into custody," Evelyn Vance ordered calmly, tapping her tablet screen to initialize the digital filing.

The two state police officers stepped forward, pulling iron handcuffs from their belts.

"Wait! Get your hands off me!" Ethan shrieked, flailing his arms as the first officer grabbed his wrist and twisted it behind his back with practiced efficiency. "Mother! Call Arthur! Call our lawyers! Clara, tell them to stop! You can't do this to me!"

"Stop this right now!" Beatrice screamed, lunging forward to grab the officer’s sleeve. "You are making a massive mistake! My son is the CEO of Sterling Logistics! Do you know who his contacts are?!"

Victor stepped in front of Beatrice, blocking her path with his massive frame, looking down at her with absolute disgust.

"His contacts were my contacts, Beatrice," Victor informed her coldly. "And as of six o'clock this morning, every single shipping contract your son’s company held has been cancelled. Sterling Logistics is bankrupt."

Beatrice stumbled backward, clutching her throat, her pearl necklace breaking under the tension of her fingers, sending small white beads clattering across the polished marble floor. "No... no, no, no..."

"You think you were clever, didn't you, Ethan?" I asked, walking slowly up to where he was pinned against the mahogany table, his face pressed against the cold wood. "You thought because I kept quiet when your mother insulted my clothes, because I let you manage the household accounts, that I was weak. You thought I was a orphan with no one to run to."

I reached into my suit jacket, pulled out my smartphone, and tapped the screen once.

The digital recorder I had pulled from the hidden sink compartment last night began to play. The high-definition audio filled the vaulted room with terrifying clarity:

CRACK.

The sharp, sickening sound of a palm striking flesh echoed through the speakers, followed by my low, painful gasp.

“When I ask you something,” Ethan’s recorded voice snarled, “you answer me!”

“It was just coffee,” my recorded whisper answered.

CRACK.

“This was never about coffee,” Ethan’s voice spat. “It’s about respect.”

Then came Beatrice’s smooth, terrifying chuckle: “A wife who isn't disciplined becomes impossible to control. Your father understood that.”

“When I wake up tomorrow,” Ethan’s voice concluded with cold venom, “I expect a full breakfast, a smile on your face, and an apology. No attitude. No excuses.”

The recording stopped.

The silence in the room was deafening. The two state police officers tightened their grip on Ethan’s wrists so hard his knuckles turned white, their eyes burning with deep, professional fury.

Evelyn Vance closed her tablet with a sharp snap. "That recording has already been authenticated by our forensic team, Mr. Sterling. It constitutes undeniable evidence of felony assault, domestic abuse, and coercive control. You won't be receiving bail today."

"Clara! Please!" Ethan sobbed, tears finally pouring down his pale cheeks as the officers shoved him toward the front door. "I'm sorry! I’ll go to therapy! I’ll do whatever you want! Don't ruin my life over a mistake!"

"A mistake happens once, Ethan," I said, standing tall, watching him being dragged across the grand foyer. "What you did was a choice. And now you get to live with the consequences."

"Get your hands off my son!" Beatrice wailed, running after them into the foyer, her slippers slipping on the marble floor. "Clara, you ungrateful little bitch! We took you in! We gave you a home!"

"You didn't give me anything, Beatrice," I called out as Victor walked up beside me, placing a warm, protective hand over my shoulder. "You lived in my house, drank my wine, and spent my money while treating me like a servant. And now... you have thirty minutes to pack your personal clothes and clear off my land."

May you like

"Thirty minutes?!" Beatrice shrieked, spinning around, her face twisted in utter panic. "Where am I supposed to go?!"

"I hear the local women's shelter is full," Victor remarked flatly, looking down at his watch. "I suggestion you start walking."
