Chapter 4 – The Ruthless Settlement

The courtroom for our final divorce settlement was tense. Daniel sat at his table looking utterly defeated. His expensive suit looked loose on him, and the dark circles under his eyes spoke of sleepless nights. Vanessa was nowhere to be found; she had resigned from their company and moved out of state to escape the scandal.
Daniel’s lawyer looked pale as he opened his briefcase.
My lawyer, Claire, didn't slide a folder across the table like Daniel had done to me at the café. Instead, she laid down a thick binder of evidence: proof of public defamation, emotional distress during a high-risk twin pregnancy, and Daniel's intentional abandonment.
"My client is amenable to a fast divorce," Claire announced to the judge. "But the terms have changed drastically from Mr. Mitchell's initial... creative proposal."
Claire presented the new demands:
Full ownership of the marital home, entirely paid off by Daniel.
Maximum monthly child support for the twins, secured by a legal trust.
Sole legal and physical custody, with Daniel receiving only strictly monitored, supervised visitation rights once the babies were older.
Daniel’s lawyer gasped. "This is financially crippling! My client cannot be expected to forfeit the house and accept these restrictions based on a misunderstanding!"
"It wasn't a misunderstanding," I spoke up, addressing the judge directly. "He publicly accused me of infidelity to justify his affair. He left me when I was vulnerable, and he attempted to extort me for 'marital expenses' while I was carrying his children. He proved he is not a partner, and he is not ready to protect these children."
The judge looked over her glasses at Daniel. "Mr. Mitchell, do you have anything to say?"
Daniel looked at me, his eyes begging for mercy. "Lauren, please. I love you. We can fix this."
"You loved your pride more than you loved your wife," I replied.
The judge didn't hesitate. She slammed her gavel down, approving every single one of our terms. "Mr. Mitchell, your behavior was abhorrent. The court finds entirely in favor of the plaintiff. This divorce is granted."

As I walked out of the courtroom, Daniel tried to follow me into the hallway. "Lauren! Can we at least talk about the birth? I want to be in the delivery room!"
I stopped and looked at him one last time. "The only people in that room will be the people who believed in these babies from the very beginning. You chose to walk out, Daniel. You don't get to walk back in just because the cameras are rolling."
