Chapter 2 – The Medical Truth

Daniel stepped closer to the monitor, his smug expression beginning to crack under Dr. Anderson’s piercing gaze. Vanessa remained near the door, her fingers tightly gripping her expensive leather purse.
"What are we looking at?" Daniel asked, trying to maintain his arrogant tone. "It's just a fetus. Just tell us the gestational age so we can prove it doesn't match my timeline."
Dr. Anderson didn't look at the paper chart. She didn't look at Daniel's aggressive stance. Instead, she adjusted the contrast on the screen, zooming in on two distinct, pulsating areas.
"Mr. Mitchell, I am looking at the gestational sac," Dr. Anderson said, her voice dropping to a calm, devastating register. "Or rather, sacs. plural. Your wife is expecting twins."
I gasped, my hand flying to my mouth. Twins.
Daniel blinked, confused. "Twins? Okay, fine. That still doesn't change who the father is."
"Oh, it changes everything," Dr. Anderson countered smoothly. "Because based on the measurement of both embryos, Lauren is exactly eleven weeks pregnant. Do you remember what happened eleven weeks ago, Mr. Mitchell?"
Daniel froze. His jaw dropped slightly.
"Eleven weeks ago was one week before your vasectomy," Dr. Anderson explained, turning the screen directly toward him. "And furthermore, looking at your medical history in our shared hospital database... your urologist noted that your post-procedure sperm count was never cleared. You skipped your follow-up appointments. You were still fully fertile when this conception occurred."
The silence in the room was deafening.
I looked at Daniel. The man who had humiliated me, who had packed his bags, who had dragged his mistress to a café to strip me of my dignity. The color was rapidly draining from his face.
"Eleven weeks..." Daniel whispered, his math finally catching up to his arrogance. Eleven weeks ago, we had spent a weekend away at a cabin, trying to rekindle our marriage before he abruptly grew cold.
"Wait, that can't be right," Vanessa chimed in, her voice high and panicked as she stepped forward. "Daniel, you said it was impossible! You told everyone she cheated!"
Dr. Anderson stood up, pulling off her medical gloves with a sharp snap. "Science doesn't lie, Ms. Miller. These babies belong to Mr. Mitchell. And given the stress this patient has been under due to false accusations, I am going to ask anyone who isn't the patient to leave my room immediately."
Daniel looked at me, his eyes wide with a sudden, horrifying realization. He had publicly ruined my reputation, moved in with another woman, and demanded a ruthless divorce—all over a miracle he had created.

"Lauren..." Daniel took a step toward the table, his hand reaching out. "I... I didn't know."
"Get out," I said. My voice wasn't shaking anymore. It was cold as ice. "Get out of my sight."
