Chapter 9 - Chloe’s Awakening and the Sinking Ship

The fallout at Bellefleur Manor was absolute.
By the end of the week, Julian Blackwood’s bride found herself trapped in a ghost mansion. The staff had walked out en masse following the arrest, refusing to work for a disgraced family facing federal racketeering charges. The wedding gifts had been returned by terrified guests wishing to distance themselves from the scandal, and the mansion itself was slapped with a federal asset-freeze lien.
Chloe sat at the grand mahogany dining table where guests were supposed to have enjoyed champagne and caviar just days earlier. Now, the room smelled of stale orchids and impending ruin.
The front doors swung open, and heavy footsteps echoed across the marble foyer.
Julian marched into the dining room, his face twisted in a mask of manic desperation. He ripped off his designer tie and hurled it against the wall.
"We're ruined, Chloe," Julian snapped, pacing back and forth across the rug. "My accounts are frozen. The board voted to strip me of my partnership this morning, and our lawyers are jumping ship like rats on a sinking ship."
Chloe looked up from her untouched coffee, her eyes dead and hollow. "Then sell the cars. Sell the jewelry."
"Sell what?!" Julian shouted, slamming his fist down on the table. "The feds have seized everything tied to the family trust! Even this house is under a federal lien! We are legally broke!"
He stopped pacing and pointed an accusing finger straight at his bride. "And it’s all your fault! If you had controlled your pathetic, attention-seeking sister instead of letting her crash our wedding with her diabetic hysterics, none of this would have happened!"
Something inside Chloe finally snapped.
The last five months of walking on eggshells, pretending to fit into a world that despised her, abandoning her own flesh and blood to please a monster—it all came crashing down in a single, blinding wave of clarity.
Chloe stood up so fast her chair screeched loudly against the floor.
"My sister," Chloe whispered, her voice trembling with fury, "has diabetes, Julian. Your mother tried to murder her in cold blood while you stood there worrying about your seating chart. And you... you blamed her for surviving?"
"Don't start with that sanctimonious garbage—" Julian snarled.
SLAP!
The crack of Chloe’s hand against Julian’s cheek echoed through the cavernous dining hall.
Julian staggered back, holding his face in shock.
"We are done," Chloe said, her voice turning to ice. "I want an annulment, I want a divorce, and I want out of this nightmare."
She ripped the twenty-thousand-dollar wedding ring off her finger and threw it directly into his chest.

"Go rot with your mother."
Without looking back, Chloe grabbed her coat from the foyer rack, walked out the front doors of Bellefleur Manor, and slammed them shut behind her for the very last time.
