Chapter 7 - Viral Catastrophe at Bellefleur Manor

While I was unpacking my small bag in the quiet familiarity of my Queens apartment, the digital world outside was tearing the Blackwood empire limb from limb.

An anonymous wedding guest—disgusted by the family's reaction to my collapse—had leaked the full, unedited security footage from the ballroom cameras directly to TikTok and X (formerly Twitter).

Within twelve hours, the video had amassed over forty million views.

The public saw everything: Evelyn mocking my insulin pump, ripping it from my waist, dropping it into the trash bin of lobster shells, and laughing as she called my medical crisis "a pathetic cry for attention." They saw her force-feeding me the poisoned wine while Chloe and Julian looked away to protect their photo op.

The backlash was catastrophic.

Protesters gathered outside the Blackwood corporate headquarters in Manhattan, holding signs that read JUSTICE FOR ELENA and MURDERERS IN TUXEDOS.

Charitable foundations that had proudly carried the Blackwood name for decades rushed to strip Evelyn and Julian from their boards of directors. Major investors pulled millions of dollars out of Julian’s real estate portfolio within hours of market opening.

And then came the subpoena.

On Tuesday morning, Special Agent Liam Vance returned to my apartment, accompanied by a federal prosecutor from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.

"Elena," the prosecutor, a sharp-eyed woman named Sarah Jenkins, greeted me warmly as I invited them into my living room. "I’m Assistant U.S. Attorney Jenkins. We’re preparing the formal federal indictment against Evelyn Thorne-Blackwood. Based on the chemical analysis of the amber vial and the financial records Liam’s team uncovered, we are upgrading her charges."

"Upgrading them to what?" I asked, offering them coffee.

"Attempted murder in the first degree, conspiracy to commit poisoning, and racketeering," Jenkins replied grimly. "We’ve also uncovered evidence that her charitable foundation was a front for laundering hush money paid to former associates who suffered similar 'medical accidents' under her roof."

Liam sat on the edge of the sofa, watching me with quiet admiration. "She’s not getting bail, Elena. The judge reviewed the flight risk and the severity of the neurotoxin. She’s staying in maximum security until trial."

"And Julian?" I asked.

"Julian and Chloe are facing civil lawsuits from every major investor and vendor connected to that wedding," Liam answered. "Their social circle has completely abandoned them. Chloe tried to call your phone this morning, didn't she?"

I looked at my silent cell phone sitting on the coffee table, where three missed calls from my sister flashed on the screen.

"She made her choice at the altar," I said quietly. "I can't save her from the bed she chose to lie in."
