Chapter 3 - The Question That Froze Time

Amelia walked forward, her steps measured and calm, navigating the sea of staring guests. The whispers began like a low hum of bees, spreading rapidly across the ballroom.

"Are those...?" "Oh my god, look at their eyes." "They look exactly like Ethan." "Is that his ex-fiancée? What is going on?"

Margaret, desperate to regain control of the narrative before her carefully constructed world shattered, stepped forward to block Amelia's path. Her eyes were wide with a mixture of fury and panic, though she tried to keep her voice low.

"Amelia," Margaret hissed, her polite mask completely slipping. "What is the meaning of this? This is a private, high-society event. How dare you bring these... these children here to make a scene?"

Amelia stopped, standing tall. She looked down at Margaret, her expression entirely serene. "You invited me, Margaret. I simply brought my family. I assumed a woman of your stature would never send an invitation she didn't expect to be accepted."

"Get them out of here," Margaret demanded, her voice shaking as she gestured wildly to a nearby security guard. "This is an outrage! You are trying to ruin my son's wedding with a pathetic lie!"

"A lie?"

The voice came from behind Margaret. Ethan had stepped forward, ignoring Olivia’s hand on his shoulder. He walked toward Amelia and the triplets as if he were moving through deep water. His eyes were wide, locked onto the three children.

He knelt down, bringing himself to eye level with the triplets.

Leo immediately stepped in front of his sisters, his small chest puffed out, his little silver-grey eyes glaring protectively at the strange man. Mia shrank back slightly, clutching her mother’s dress.

But Chloe stood her ground.

She looked at Ethan, her gaze incredibly sharp for a four-year-old. Then, she looked up at the massive oil painting of the Caldwell family hanging on the ballroom wall, then back at Ethan, and finally at Margaret, who was trembling with rage.

The ballroom was so silent you could hear the soft hum of the air conditioning. Five hundred people held their breath, waiting for the collision.

Chloe looked directly into Ethan's eyes and asked, her sweet, clear voice carrying perfectly across the silent, cavernous room:

"Mommy? Is that the sad prince you told us about? The one who was too afraid of his own mommy to love us?"
