Chapter 5 - The Aftermath and the Truth

The grand ballroom of the Carrington Resort was in complete chaos within thirty minutes.
Richard Ashworth had publicly declared the immediate termination of all joint venture commercial contracts between the Ashworth Shipping Group and Carrington Enterprises before storming out with his weeping daughter. Guests swept out toward the valet in a flurry of sensational gossip that would dominate Savannah and Atlanta social circles for months.
Inside the private executive office on the top floor of the resort, the atmosphere was suffocating.
Lenora sat behind the mahogany desk, her hands trembling as she poured herself a glass of water. Her social secretary was frantically answering phone calls from board members and public relations managers.
The door flew open, and Harrison walked in. He had removed his tuxedo jacket and bowtie, his shirt collar unbuttoned, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows.
"Where are they?" Harrison demanded immediately.
"I had security escort her to the private lounge downstairs," Lenora said, trying to regain her regal composure, though her voice lacked its usual sharpness. "Harrison, listen to me carefully. We need to handle this with extreme caution. We will demand an immediate, private DNA test through our corporate attorneys. If—and I stress if—those children are indeed yours, we will arrange a quiet financial settlement with that woman. We can give her a generous allowance in exchange for full custody or strict non-disclosure—"
"You really don't get it, do you?" Harrison interrupted, stepping toward the desk.
Lenora blinked. "Get what?"
"You think everything in this world can be bought, settled, or silenced," Harrison said, his voice laced with profound disgust. "You destroyed my life five years ago because Evelyn didn't fit your sick idea of nobility. You made me believe I was broken, that she was wrong for me, and I was weak enough to let you do it."
"I protected this family!" Lenora snapped, standing up. "Look at what she did today! She publicly disgraced us! She humiliated the Ashworths! She destroyed our reputation!"
"No, Mother," Harrison said softly, looking at her with a clarity he had never possessed before. "You destroyed our reputation the day you decided people were only worth something if they came with a deed to property."
Harrison pulled a thick silver keycard from his pocket and threw it onto the mahogany desk. It bounced against her glass.
"What is this?" Lenora asked.
"My resignation as Chief Operating Officer of Carrington Enterprises," Harrison stated flatly. "Effective immediately. I am relinquishing my seat on the board, my corporate accounts, and my rights to the family estate trust."
Lenora’s face turned ghostly white. "You... you can't be serious. You are a Carrington! You are the sole heir!"
"I don't care about the Carrington name," Harrison said, turning toward the door. "I care about being a father. Something I should have been four years ago."
"If you walk out that door, Harrison, I will cut you off completely!" Lenora screamed after him, her voice cracking with desperation. "You will have nothing! No resorts, no name, no standing!"
Harrison stopped at the threshold, looking back over his shoulder with a quiet, bitter smile.

"I had nothing the moment I let Evelyn walk away," he said. "For the first time in my life, I'm going to go earn something real."
He pulled the heavy door shut, leaving Lenora standing alone in her empty, quiet office.
