Chapter 4 - The Altar Collapses

The silence that followed Evelyn's words was absolute, broken only by the sound of the ocean waves crashing against the stone barrier below.

At the rear of the pavilion, the heavy brass doors opened fully, and the herald trumpet sounded. Victoria Ashworth, stunning in a custom silk gown with a ten-foot lace train, stepped onto the red carpet arm-in-arm with her father, the shipping magnate Richard Ashworth.

Victoria smiled radiantly, raising her bouquet—until she realized nobody was looking at her.

The entire audience of three hundred high-society guests was facing backward, staring at Evelyn and the three children. The photographers, hired to document the elite wedding of the decade, had instinctively lowered their main cameras and were now frantically snapping photos of the triplets.

"Harrison?" Victoria’s voice called out, her radiant smile faltering as she took three steps forward down the aisle. "Harrison, what is going on?"

Harrison didn't hear her. He didn't turn his head. He didn't even acknowledge that his bride was standing at the back of the chapel.

He stepped down off the raised marble altar, his polished shoes hitting the carpet with heavy, unsteady steps. He walked past the officiant, past his best man, completely oblivious to the world around him.

"Harrison! Stop right there!" Lenora barked, stepping directly into his path, her face twisted in rage. "Security! Remove this woman and her disruption immediately!"

"Touch them and I will have every local and state news network here before the hour is out," Evelyn warned, her voice cool and steady. "And I don't think Carrington Enterprises wants the headlines detailing how you treated your own grandchildren."

Grandchildren.

The word exploded through the audience like a cannon shot. Guests gasped openly. Richard Ashworth’s face turned purple with anger as he realized the magnitude of the public humiliation unfolding before him.

"Harrison," Richard Ashworth roared, stepping past his daughter. "What is the meaning of this outrage?!"

Harrison ignored Ashworth completely. He gently pushed past his mother, his eyes never leaving the three small children standing beside Evelyn.

He stopped three feet away from them. He dropped to his knees right there on the white carpet, his expensive tuxedo pants pressing into the ground.

His hands shook as he reached out, stopping just short of touching Leo's shoulder, terrified that if he touched them, they might vanish into thin air.

"Evelyn..." Harrison’s voice broke, raw and completely stripped of his usual polished composure. "Evelyn... are they...?"

"They are four years old, Harrison," Evelyn said, looking down at him without a shred of pity, but without malice either. "Their names are Leo, Oliver, and Clara."

Leo shifted slightly, stepping closer to Evelyn's leg, looking at the man kneeling before them. "Mommy, why is that man crying?"

Harrison choked back a sob, a tear spilling over his eyelashes and tracking down his cheek. He looked at Oliver's dimple, then at Clara’s sharp, intelligent hazel eyes—the exact eyes his grandmother had possessed.

"Five years ago," Harrison whispered, his voice trembling, "my mother said... the doctors said..."

"The doctors said it was difficult," Evelyn corrected him coldly. "Lenora chose to hear 'impossible' because it gave her an excuse to get rid of a mechanic's daughter. And you stood by the fireplace, looked at the carpet, and let her do it."

Harrison lowered his head, his shoulders shaking as the utter weight of his cowardice slammed into his soul. For five years, he had lived in an empty, hollow shell, believing he was performing his duty. He had given up the only woman he ever loved to please a mother who managed his life like a corporate portfolio. And in doing so, he had missed the birth of his children. He had missed their first steps, their first words, their first laughter.

"This is an absolute farce!" Lenora yelled, walking up behind Harrison, her voice shaking with desperate fury. "Harrison, get up off the floor this instant! She is trying to ruin your life! She brought illegitimate children here to extort this family!"

Harrison stood up slowly.

He turned around to face his mother. The passive, compliant son who had spent thirty-two years obeying Lenora Carrington was gone. In his eyes was a cold, blazing fury that made Lenora step back half a pace in shock.

"Shut up, Mother," Harrison said, his voice terrifyingly quiet.

Lenora gasped, placing a hand over her chest. "How dare you—"

"I said shut up!" Harrison roared, his voice echoing across the entire resort grounds, shutting down every whisper in the audience.

He turned to look at Victoria Ashworth, who was standing frozen in the middle of the aisle, her face pale, tears of humiliation ruining her makeup.

"Victoria," Harrison said, his tone flat and dead. "I am sorry. I cannot marry you. This wedding is over."
