Chapter 5 - Face to Face with the Monster

The air in the subterranean corridor smelled faintly of bleach, damp concrete, and metallic rust.
Our footsteps were soundless against the rubber floor runner as Agent Miller and three tactical officers led the way down the stairs, their silenced submachine guns held at the ready, tactical flashlights cutting narrow beams through the gloom.
I walked directly behind Miller, my heart hammering against my Kevlar vest like a trapped bird.
At the end of the corridor stood a reinforced steel security door equipped with a small glass viewing window. Beyond it lay a brightly lit, sterile room that looked like a makeshift medical isolation ward.
Agent Miller peered through the glass, then signaled for the team to hold.
He motioned for me to look.
I pressed my face against the cool glass window, and my breath caught in my throat.
Inside the room, sitting bound to a heavy wooden chair, was Harrison. He was wearing a grey jumpsuit, his head resting weakly against his chest, an IV line hooked to the back of his hand leading to a rolling drip stand.
Standing directly in front of him, dressed in an elegant silk blouse and holding a loaded silver revolver, was Victoria Sterling.
Beside her stood two armed private security guards, monitoring a heavy laptop set up on a stainless steel medical table.
"Sign the final power of attorney waiver, Harrison," Victoria’s cold voice echoed faintly through the reinforced door's ventilation grille. "The board meeting is in six hours. Once your digital signature is verified by the bank's wire transfer system, I will give you a lethal dose of potassium chloride. It will be fast. Peaceful. Much better than spending another day in this box."
Harrison lifted his head slowly. Even in his emaciated, battered state, a cold, mocking smile touched his pale lips.
"You're... you're too late, Rachel," Harrison rasped out, his voice weak but filled with absolute defiance. "The package... reached Sarah. She has the flash drive. She has your real identity."
Victoria’s calm demeanor cracked instantly. Her face contorted into a mask of pure, demonic rage. She raised the silver revolver, pointing the barrel straight between Harrison's eyes.
"Then I'll kill you now," she snarled, "and hunt down your pathetic ex-wife and brat before the sun comes up!"
"BREACH! BREACH! BREACH!" Agent Miller roared into his radio.
BOOM!
A flashbang grenade was thrown through the door's side panel, exploding inside the room with a deafening crack and a blinding flash of white light.
The reinforced door was kicked open with immense force, swinging wide as tactical officers poured into the room, their weapons raised.
"FBI! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DOWN ON THE GROUND! NOW!"
The two private security guards immediately dropped their guns, raising their hands in terror as four federal agents tackled them to the concrete floor, securing their wrists with heavy zip-ties.
Victoria, blinded and disoriented by the flashbang, stumbled backward against the medical table, her silver revolver waving wildly through the air.
"STAY BACK!" she shrieked, her voice high-pitched and hysterical as her eyes locked onto me stepping into the room. "YOU! You ruined everything! I spent five years building this empire!"
She snapped the gun around, aiming the barrel directly at my chest.
"NO!" Harrison screamed with every ounce of strength left in his body.
With a desperate, explosive surge of adrenaline, Harrison threw his entire body forward, tipping his heavy wooden chair sideways and slamming violently into Victoria’s legs just as she pulled the trigger.
BANG!
The bullet shattered a glass bottle on the shelf above my head, showering harmlessly down onto the floor.
Before Victoria could cock the hammer again, Agent Miller stepped forward, throwing a heavy tactical elbow across her jaw. The revolver clattered across the concrete floor, and two agents forced her down onto her stomach, clicking steel handcuffs tightly around her wrists.
"Rachel Collins, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, international identity theft, kidnapping, and attempted murder!" Agent Miller declared, his knee planted firmly in her back as she screamed and spat curses into the floor.
I paid no attention to her.
I dropped to my knees beside the tipped-over chair, my hands frantically tearing at the heavy ropes binding Harrison’s wrists and ankles.
"Harrison! Harrison!" I cried, tears streaming down my cheeks as I cradled his pale, bruised face in my hands.
Harrison opened his eyes, looking up at me through a haze of pain and exhaustion. He lifted one trembling, bruised hand, his fingers gently touching my cheek, wiping away a tear.

"Sarah..." he whispered, his voice breaking into a soft, beautiful sob. "You came... you actually came..."
"I came for you," I sobbed, pulling his head against my chest, wrapping my arms around him as tactical medics rushed into the room with a stretcher. "I came to bring you home to our daughter."
