Chapter 1 - Shadows at the Door

The wood of the apartment door vibrated against my forehead as another slow, deliberate knock echoed down the narrow, dimly lit hallway.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

Outside, Victoria Sterling stood motionless in the harsh yellow light of the corridor, holding the empty brown cardboard shipping box like a trophy. Her sleek black hair was pulled into an immaculate bun, her dark trench coat tailored to perfection. She looked less like a human being and more like a predator patiently waiting for a rabbit to bolt from its burrow.

"Open the door, Sarah," her voice came again, smooth and entirely devoid of emotion. "I know Harrison sent you the doll. We can do this quietly, or we can make a scene that will frighten your little girl."

My heart pounded violently against my ribs. In my robe pocket, the hard plastic edges of the black USB drive cut into my thigh, alongside Harrison's handwritten plea for help and the fake driver's license bearing Victoria’s face with the name Rachel Collins.

In the bedroom behind me, five-year-old Chloe let out a muffled whimper.

"Mommy?" Chloe’s sleepy, terrified voice drifted through the crack in her bedroom door. "Is that the bad woman Daddy warned me about?"

That innocent question crystallized the terrifying reality of my situation. Harrison hadn't just mailed a desperate cry for help to his ex-wife; he had somehow communicated with our five-year-old daughter beforehand—or slipped a message to her through the packaging—warning her to keep the doll’s contents hidden from "the bad woman."

I backed away from the peephole, step by silent step, until my heels hit the hallway rug.

"I'm calling the police, Victoria," I yelled, trying to keep my voice from shaking. "Get away from my door!"

Through the thick wood, I heard a low, soft chuckle—a sound so chilling it made the hairs on my arms stand on end.

"Go ahead, call them," Victoria replied calmly. "Captain Miller in the 10th Precinct is on my family's foundation board. Lieutenant Gomez handles our private security details. Who do you think they’ll believe, Sarah? A bitter, broke ex-wife harboring stolen property, or a grieving heiress looking for her mentally unstable, missing husband?"

Her words hit me like a splash of ice water. The first video on the USB drive echoed in my mind—Harrison’s hollow eyes and bruised face leaning toward the camera, whispering: “Don’t go to the police. She owns people there.”

Clack.

The distinct, metallic sound of a heavy brass key sliding into my apartment’s deadbolt made my blood run cold.

She had a master key.

Whether she had bribed my apartment building's sleazy landlord or picked the lock herself, the deadbolt was slowly turning.

"Chloe, under the bed! NOW!" I screamed, turning on my heel and bolting toward her bedroom.

I slammed Chloe's bedroom door shut, throwing my full weight against it just as the front door of our apartment swung open with a heavy THUD. High-heeled shoes clicked loudly against the linoleum flooring of my small living room.

"Mommy!" Chloe sobbed, hugging the dirty rag doll against her chest as she cowered under her pink bedspread.

"Stay down, baby! Stay under there!" I begged, frantically sliding her heavy oak dressers across the floor to barricade her bedroom door. The wood scraped harshly against the floorboards as I shoved it in place, blocking the handle just as someone slammed hard against the other side.

BOOM!

"Sarah, don't be foolish," Victoria’s voice echoed from the living room, accompanied by the heavy, heavy footsteps of at least two large men she had brought with her. "Give me the flash drive and the license, and I'll walk away. I'll even write you a check for a million dollars. You can leave this dump, buy a house, put Chloe in a private school. You owe Harrison nothing! He left you!"

"He's the father of my child!" I screamed back, tears of absolute terror and adrenaline burning my eyes as I looked around the tiny bedroom for an escape route.

The fire escape window.

I rushed to the window, threw up the wooden latch, and shoved the frame upward. Cold night air rushed into the room, bringing the smell of rain and wet asphalt. Three stories down, the rusted iron fire escape zig-zagged into the narrow alleyway behind our building.

BOOM!

The wood around Chloe’s bedroom door frame began to splinter under the force of a heavy shoulder.

"Chloe, come here! Fast!" I commanded, reaching under the bed and hauling my daughter into my arms. I wrapped her arms tightly around my neck. "Hold on to Mommy with all your strength, do you hear me? Don't look down!"

I stuffed the rag doll into my robe pocket alongside the USB drive, grabbed my purse off the nightstand, and climbed out onto the freezing iron platform of the fire escape just as the bedroom door split open with a sickening crunch.

A massive man in a dark suit thrust his arm through the splintered gap in the door, trying to clear the heavy dresser. Behind him, Victoria Sterling’s ice-cold eyes locked onto mine through the doorway.

"Get them!" she commanded.

I didn't wait. I grabbed the iron railing, wrapped my arm firmly around Chloe’s trembling waist, and began sprinting down the slippery, rusted metal stairs into the dark alley below.
