Chapter 4 - The True Genetic Failure

The silence in the ballroom was so absolute you could hear the wax dripping from the towering candelabras.
Richard’s face was no longer red; it was a sickly, translucent white. He took a half-step back, his boots squeaking against the polished floor. "You... you're making things up. This is a fabrication."
"I don't fabricate, Richard," I said, my voice ringing with a cold, triumphant clarity. "You knew you were the one who couldn't have children. You were diagnosed with severe, irreversible azoospermia when you were twenty-four, years before you even met me. You hid the diagnosis from your own mother, from your board of directors, and most of all, from me."
Beatrice Hale slowly turned her head toward her son, her eyes wide with a mixture of confusion and dawning horror. "Richard... what is she talking about? You... you told me she was the one."
"She's lying, Mother!" Richard screamed, his voice cracking. "Look at Vanessa! She’s pregnant! If I was sterile, how could she be carrying my child? Explain that, Elena! Explain the baby!"
I looked at Vanessa.
The bride looked as if she were about to faint. Her fingers were dug so deeply into her lace dress that I heard the delicate fabric rip. She looked at Richard, then at the folder in my hand, and then she slowly closed her eyes, letting out a ragged, defeated sob.
"I’m glad you asked, Richard," I said, pulling out a third set of documents from the folder. "Because that is the second half of the truth you spent years praying would never come out."
I turned to the guests, holding up a high-resolution photograph taken by a private investigator. It showed Vanessa Moore entering a luxury apartment building in Brooklyn Heights late at night, accompanied by a man who was very familiar to everyone in the Hale Shipping corporate hierarchy.
"This is Julian Vance," I said. "Your cousin, and the Chief Financial Officer of Hale Shipping. The man you trusted to manage your family's remaining assets."
"Julian?" Richard whispered, his head slowly turning toward the groomsmen.
Julian, who was standing in the second position of the wedding party, immediately stepped back, his eyes darting toward the side exit. But two of Alexander's men were already standing there, their arms crossed.
"For the past eighteen months, Vanessa and Julian have been engaged in an active, highly lucrative affair," I said, reading from the private investigator’s log. "But they didn't just share a bed, Richard. They shared a bank account. My husband's financial team conducted a forensic audit of Hale Shipping's corporate accounts last week. Julian has been funneling millions of dollars into an offshore trust in the Cayman Islands, registered under Vanessa’s maiden name."
The guests were now standing up in their pews, some of them filming the confrontation on their phones.
"They knew you were sterile, Richard," I said, looking at him with genuine, cold pity. "Vanessa discovered your medical files in your study a year ago. Instead of leaving you, she and Julian realized they could use your desperation for an heir to secure the entire Hale fortune. She got pregnant by Julian. They planned to present the child as your miracle heir, wait for you to sign over the majority share of the company to the child's trust, and then... well, let's just say a divorce would have been very profitable for them."
"No... no, it's a lie!" Vanessa sobbed, finally dropping her bouquet completely. "Richard, I love you! She’s trying to ruin us! She’s bitter because you left her!"
"If it's a lie, Vanessa, then why did you file this?"

I pulled out the final document—a certified copy of a prenatal DNA paternity test request, filed quietly under a pseudonym at a private lab in New Jersey.
"You wanted to make sure Julian was the father before the baby was born, didn't you?" I asked. "But the lab required a comparison sample from the legal husband to verify the results for court admissibility. You tried to steal a hair from Richard's brush, but my team intercepted the courier. The results are right here. The biological father of the child Vanessa is carrying... is Julian Vance."
