Chapter 4 - ARRIVAL IN THE OLD WORLD

The afternoon sun of northern Italy cast a warm, golden glow across the cobblestone courtyard of our new home in Milan.

It wasn't a sprawling, soulless mansion like the one in Greenwich or the sterile glass fortress in Chicago. It was a historic, sun-drenched apartment building nestled in a quiet, vibrant neighborhood just blocks from the Piazza del Duomo. Tall French doors opened out onto a wrought-iron balcony overflowing with blooming geraniums and trailing ivy.

Inside, the movers were quietly placing our suitcases in the master bedroom.

Ethan sat on the plush velvet sofa, excitedly sketching a picture of the Duomo cathedral with a box of colored markers, while Sophie happily munched on a warm, flaky croissant she had received from the bakery downstairs.

"Mommy," Sophie asked, looking up with bright, untroubled eyes, "is this our new house forever?"

I walked over, knelt beside her chair, and gently brushed a stray curl away from her forehead.

"Yes, sweetheart," I smiled, feeling a profound sense of peace settle deep into my bones. "Forever and ever."

My phone chimed softly in my pocket.

I pulled it out and saw a message from an unknown number in Chicago. It was a single voicemail transcription from an automated service, forwarded by my lawyer.

The text was a chaotic, garbled mess of frantic background shouting, weeping, and a police dispatcher's automated voice confirming an emergency call from St. Jude Memorial Hospital regarding a violent altercation in the VIP wing, followed by notices of corporate freezing orders and federal investigations.

I didn't listen to the audio file.

Instead, I held my finger over the screen and tapped Delete.

The past belonged to ghosts. It belonged to cold stone mansions, whispered insults, and men who believed that power and money were shields against karma.

Out on the balcony, the church bells of Milan began to ring out, chiming the hour across the ancient city rooftops. The sound was rich, clear, and full of life.

I stood up, walked out onto the balcony, and breathed in the crisp European air, feeling the warm Mediterranean breeze brush against my face.

For the first time in my life, the future wasn't something I had to wait for.

It was already here.
