Chapter 3 - THE COLLAPSE OF THE DYNASTY

The word hung in the air of the luxury examination suite, sharp and lethal as a scalpel.

Sterile.

For three full seconds, nobody moved. The rhythmic thump-thump of the fetal heartbeat on the monitor seemed to mock the absolute paralysis that gripped the room.

Jason let out a short, hysterical laugh, his face flushing a violent shade of crimson. "What kind of sick joke is this, Harrison? Are you out of your mind? Look at the screen! That’s my child!"

"It is a biological impossibility, Mr. Carter," Dr. Harrison said, his voice unwavering as he turned the monitor screen toward them, displaying the electronic medical records in plain, undeniable text. "Following your treatment and subsequent complications five years ago, your sperm count dropped to absolute zero. Permanent azoospermia. We documented it twice. Your file has been in our secure hospital database since the day Elena gave birth to your second child."

Eleanor grabbed the back of her velvet armchair for support, her face draining of all color. "That's... that's absurd! Jason is a Carter! Our bloodline—"

"Your bloodline is entirely irrelevant to medical science, Mrs. Carter," Dr. Harrison interrupted coldly. "Genetics do not bend to social status."

Jason spun around to face Nicole. The color had completely vanished from her face, her carefully manicured fingers clutching the edge of the examination table so hard her knuckles turned white.

"Nicole," Jason whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of raw horror and rising fury. "What is he talking about? Who... whose baby is this?"

Nicole opened her mouth, but no sound came out. Her eyes darted frantically around the room, searching for an escape route that wasn't there. The designer composure, the flawless smile, the haughty arrogance—it all dissolved into a pathetic, trembling puddle of panic.

"Jason, I can explain—" she stammered, her voice cracking.

"Explain what?!" Jason roared, lunging forward so violently that the tray of medical instruments rattled. "Who is the father?! Have you been sleeping with someone else behind my back while I was funding your entire lifestyle?!"

"Keep your voice down!" Lauren shrieked, mortified, though her own hands were shaking as she stared at Nicole in utter disbelief. "You absolute fool! You've destroyed us!"

"Me?!" Nicole snapped back, dropping the polite facade entirely as she scrambled off the examination table. "You think I wanted to live in a gilded cage with a man whose family treats everyone like garbage?! You were just a stepping stone, Jason! You and your stupid, arrogant mother!"

Before Nicole could reach the door, Eleanor stepped directly into her path, her eyes blazing with a fury that could melt steel.

"You vile, deceitful little parasite," Eleanor hissed, her voice trembling with venomous rage. "You wormed your way into our inner circle, you milked our accounts, and you tried to pass off a bastard as a Carter heir?"

"Get out of my way!" Nicole screamed, shoving Eleanor aside with surprising force. The older woman stumbled, catching herself against the instrument cart, while Nicole wrenched the door open and fled down the hallway, leaving her designer shopping bags scattered across the floor.

Jason stood frozen in the center of the room. His hands were shaking violently at his sides. The glittering future he had envisioned—the board seat, the dynasty, the public triumph over his ex-wife—had imploded in less than five minutes.

Then, his pocket vibrated.

A notification banner flashed across his phone screen. It was an automated alert from his primary business account—the one linked directly to the Carter Family Foundation.

ALERT: Large outbound wire transfer executed. Destination: International Account (Milan, Italy). Remaining balance: $0.00.

Jason snatched the phone out of his pocket, unlocking it with trembling fingers. Below the bank alert was an email from Attorney Dawson.

Attached to the email was a single PDF document titled: Forensic Audit & Foundation Embezzlement Disclosure.

Jason clicked on it. The first page displayed a detailed breakdown of every single dollar he had illegally diverted from the charity to fund Nicole's luxury condo, complete with his own digital signature authorizing the transfers.

At the bottom of the email, a brief message from Dawson was displayed in bold text:

“Thank you for signing the divorce papers without reading the financial provisions, Jason. Elena sends her regards from the Mediterranean. The federal indictment for charity fraud will be delivered to your office by Monday morning.”

Jason stared at the screen, the room spinning around him.

He had lost his wife. He had lost his children. He had lost his money, his reputation, and his freedom.

And as he looked over at his mother and sister, who were now screaming at each other in hysterical panic, Jason realized the most terrifying truth of all:

He had done it entirely to himself.
