Chapter 5 - The Glass Shatters

The room fell into a dead, suffocating silence.
Julian Sterling’s smile froze. Vanessa took a step back, her face draining of color until she looked like a ghost under the crystal chandeliers.
“Ethan,” Julian attempted a smooth, patronizing laugh, stepping forward to grab my shoulder. “The stress of the evening is clearly affecting your mind—”
“Touch me again, Julian, and I’ll break your wrist,” I said calmly, turning my head to glare at him.
The cold fury in my eyes made the sixty-year-old lawyer freeze in his tracks.
I reached into my tuxedo pocket, pulled out my satellite tablet, and tapped the screen once.
Instantly, the giant high-definition projection screens surrounding the ballroom—which had been displaying romantic photos of Vanessa and me—flickered.
The ambient music cut out.
In its place, high-resolution scans of the Ototox-4 chemical receipts, the offshore Zurich bank transfer records between Julian and Vanessa, and the high-definition video feed of Vanessa entering the private upper pantry with the toxic compound filled every screen in the mansion.
Gasps of horror tore through the crowd.
Board members stood up from their chairs in shock. High-profile investors stared at the screens in utter disbelief as the evidence of the systematic poisoning played out in front of three hundred witnesses.
“This is a lie!” Vanessa screamed, her angelic demeanor shattering into wild, frantic panic. “He’s crazy! He’s having a neurological breakdown! Security! Escort him out!”
Four heavy security guards stepped forward from the back of the room, raising their sidearms.
“Don't move!” one of the guards shouted, pointing his weapon at me.
Before they could take three steps, the heavy oak doors of the ballroom were slammed open.
A dozen armed federal officers clad in black tactical gear burst into the hall, led by Special Agent Ramirez of the FBI’s White-Collar Crime Division, accompanied by Dr. Aris Thorne.
“Federal agents! Nobody move!” Ramirez’s voice boomed over the intercom.
The four corrupted security guards immediately dropped their weapons to the floor, raising their hands in surrender.
Vanessa turned wildly, looking for an exit toward the service corridor, but Dr. Thorne stepped into her path, holding up a sealed evidence bag containing the dark herbal tea I had dumped into my napkin hours earlier.
“The lab results came back five minutes ago, Vanessa,” Thorne said coldly. “Lethal concentrations of organophosphate neurotoxins. Enough to induce total neurological failure within twenty-four hours.”
Julian Sterling tried to slip into the crowd toward the terrace doors, but two federal agents tackled him to the marble floor, slamming his face against the polished tile as they snapped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
“Ethan!” Julian shrieked from the floor, his dignified lawyer’s posture ruined. “It was her! She brought the plan to me! She reached out to the offshore buyer first! I was just managing the legal framework!”
“Shut up, you fool!” Vanessa shrieked, turning on him like a cornered animal.
She looked back at me, her hair disheveled, her immaculate white silk gown looking like a shroud. She tried to step toward me, her eyes brimming with desperate, fake tears.
“Ethan... please,” she whimpered, her voice trembling. “They forced me... Julian threatened my family... I love you, Ethan, you know I love you—”
I walked over to her, stopping inches away.
I reached out, gently slipped the multi-carat diamond engagement ring off her finger, and let it drop into the crystal glass of poisoned champagne she had given me earlier.
Clink.
“I can hear you, Vanessa,” I whispered softly, my voice carrying clearly through the silent room. “And every word you speak is a lie.”

Agent Ramirez stepped forward, pulling Vanessa’s arms behind her back and clicking the handcuffs into place.
As she was dragged away through the crowd of horrified elite guests, weeping and screaming curses into the night air, the heavy weight that had rested on my chest for six long months finally lifted.
