Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Toast

When I stepped back into the glowing ballroom, the grand engagement party was reaching its peak.
The string quartet was playing a soft waltz, and waiters in pristine black suits were circulating with silver trays of vintage champagne. Vanessa was standing near the microphone stand at the front of the stage, flanked by Julian Sterling and three major board members of Vance Dynamics.
When she saw me enter from the side doors, her eyes widened slightly in surprise—she hadn't expected me to be away for so long. But her smile instantly recovered.
“There he is!” Julian Sterling announced into the microphone, his voice booming through the ballroom speakers. “The man of the hour! Ethan Vance!”
The crowd erupted into applause.
I walked slowly toward the stage, exaggerating a slight wobble in my step. I allowed my head to tilt, my hand reaching out to grab the edge of a table as if struggling with severe vertigo.
Vanessa rushed off the stage, catching my arm with her delicate, deadly touch.
“Ethan,” she whispered hurriedly, her voice tight with panic. “Where were you? You look terrible. Did you take your medicine?”
“I took it, Vanessa,” I muttered, slurring my words slightly while looking into her eyes with simulated confusion. “My ears... everything sounds like it’s underwater... I can barely hear you...”
A cold glimmer of victory flashed in her eyes. She squeezed my arm tightly.
“It’s okay, darling,” she whispered softly, leaning close to my ear. “Just get through the toast. Julian has the legal papers ready for your mark. After that, you can rest forever.”
Rest forever. The sheer arrogance of her words sent a surge of adrenaline through my veins.
She guided me onto the small wooden stage. Julian handed me a crystal glass filled with vintage Dom Pérignon. He held his own glass high, smiling warmly at the gathered crowd of three hundred elite guests.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Julian began, his tone rich with theatrical emotion. “Tonight, we celebrate not only the union of two remarkable souls, Ethan Vance and the brilliant Vanessa Croft, but also the enduring legacy of Vance Dynamics. As Ethan faces a tragic, unforeseen medical challenge with his health, we stand by him—not just as colleagues, but as a family.”
Murmurs of sympathy echoed through the room. Board members nodded solemnly.
“Ethan,” Julian turned to me, offering me a fountain pen with a gold nib. “Before we toast, the board has prepared the administrative update for the Wall Street SEC filings—the formal authorization transferring temporary executive oversight to Vanessa during your recovery period. A mere formality to protect our shareholders.”
Vanessa stood beside me, holding the thick leather folder open. Her hand was steady. Her eyes were fixed on the signature line.
The entire ballroom was silent, waiting for the tragic, brilliant young billionaire to sign away his empire.
I took the gold fountain pen.
I looked down at the paper. Then I looked at Vanessa.
“You know, Vanessa,” I said, my voice clear, sharp, and perfectly articulated—without a single trace of slurring or hesitation. “My grandmother always told me that true love requires absolute listening.”
Vanessa blinked, startled by the sudden clarity of my tone. “Ethan... what are you talking about? Sign the paper, darling, you're confused—”
“I’m not confused, Vanessa,” I said, stepping away from her touch.

I leaned toward the standing microphone, my voice projecting with crisp, thunderous authority through every speaker in the grand ballroom.
“In fact, for the first time in six months... I can hear every single thing in this room.”
