CHAPTER 7 — The Man Who Returned With Philip's Last Secret

The call came on New Year's Eve.

I almost ignored it.

The number wasn't in my contacts.

"Mrs. Rhonda Collins?"

"Yes."

"My name is Daniel Mercer."

The name stirred something deep in my memory.

It took several seconds before I remembered.

Daniel.

Philip's younger brother.

The man who had moved to Australia nearly twenty years earlier after accepting an engineering position overseas.

We had exchanged Christmas cards for a few years after Philip died.

Then life happened.

The cards stopped.

The years passed.

"I've just landed," Daniel said quietly.

"I heard about Garrett."

I closed my eyes.

"News travels fast."

"It wasn't the news."

"It was Marvin."

"He called me."

There was a long pause.

"I have something your husband wanted you to receive."

Two hours later, Daniel sat across from me in my living room.

Time had added silver to his hair and lines around his eyes, but his smile still reminded me of Philip's.

He carried an old cedar box.

Its brass latch was worn smooth.

I recognized it instantly.

Philip had kept it in our bedroom closet for decades.

"I thought that box was lost."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"He gave it to me six months before he died."

"He told me never to open it."

"Only to bring it back to you if..." Daniel hesitated.

"...if Garrett ever chose greed over family."

My chest tightened.

Philip had planned for everything.

Daniel opened the box.

Inside were old photographs, handwritten notes, military medals belonging to Philip's father...

...and a sealed envelope.

Across the front were six familiar words.

For Rhonda, when you're finally free.

With trembling hands, I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

And beneath it...

A small velvet jewelry box.

I stared at it in confusion.

Philip had already given me my engagement ring.

What could this be?

I opened the box.

Inside lay a simple gold band.

My original wedding ring.

The one I had sold twenty-eight years earlier to pay Garrett's emergency medical bills after a terrible accident.

Tears streamed down my face.

"I thought it was gone."

Daniel smiled softly.

"Philip secretly bought it back."

"He spent seven years searching for it."

"He found it at an estate auction."

I couldn't speak.

The letter explained everything.

My darling Rhonda,

You cried for weeks after selling your wedding ring.

You thought I never noticed.

I noticed everything.

You always believed sacrifice proved love.

But I wanted at least one sacrifice returned to you.

If you're wearing this ring again, it means you've finally chosen yourself.

I slipped the ring onto my finger.

It fit perfectly.

Like coming home.

Before Daniel left, he handed me one final envelope.

"This wasn't from Philip."

"It was from me."

Inside was a certified bank check.

One hundred thousand dollars.

I looked up in shock.

"I can't accept this."

"Yes, you can."

"What is it for?"

Daniel smiled.

"Twenty-five years ago Philip loaned me money when my business failed."

"I tried to repay him."

"He refused."

"He said..."

Daniel's voice cracked.

"...'If you ever want to repay me, help Rhonda someday when she needs it.'"

He looked around my beautiful home.

"I know you don't need the money."

"But honoring my brother..."

"...I need that."

I hugged him tightly.

May you like

For the first time in years...

Family felt like family again.
