CHAPTER 3 — The Trust My Husband Left Behind

CHAPTER 3 — The Trust My Husband Left Behind

Sleep never truly came.

I spent most of the night sitting in the leather chair beside the bedroom window, watching snow settle over the frozen lake. Every now and then I reached for the framed photograph of Philip and traced the edge with my thumb.

He had been gone for six years.

Yet somehow, that Christmas night, I felt closer to him than I had since the day I buried him.

At 8:45 the next morning, I parked outside Marvin Ellis Financial Group.

Marvin had managed our investments for nearly twenty years. Philip trusted him more than anyone outside our family.

When I stepped into his office, he stood immediately.

"You look tired."

"I feel older than I did yesterday."

"You won't after today."

His expression wasn't sympathetic.

It was determined.

He closed the office door, pulled the blinds shut, and laid a thick leather binder on the conference table.

Across the cover were embossed gold letters.

PHILIP COLLINS FAMILY TRUST

My heart skipped.

"I've never seen that."

"You weren't supposed to."

Marvin slid the binder toward me.

"Philip instructed me to keep this sealed unless one of two things happened."

"What things?"

"If Garrett became financially responsible and proved he could protect you..."

He paused.

"...or if he betrayed you."

I swallowed hard.

"So yesterday..."

"...fulfilled the second condition."

He opened the binder carefully.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The paper had yellowed slightly with age.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Philip's.

My hands trembled before I even unfolded it.

My Dearest Rhonda,

If you're reading this, then something has gone terribly wrong.

Either I'm gone longer than I hoped... or Garrett has forgotten who raised him.

I pray I'm wrong.

But if I'm right, then I need you to hear this from me.

Tears blurred the words.

Marvin quietly handed me a tissue.

I continued reading.

You love too easily.

It's the thing I admired most about you... and the thing I feared someone would someday exploit.

Especially our son.

I covered my mouth.

No.

Philip had adored Garrett.

Hadn't he?

The next sentence answered me.

Garrett has always believed love means rescue.

Every time he failed, you saved him.

Every time he overspent, you covered it.

Every mistake disappeared because his mother worked another shift.

I worried that one day he'd stop seeing your sacrifices and start seeing them as obligations.

Fresh tears rolled down my cheeks.

Memories crashed over me.

The bounced checks.

The business loans.

The credit card debt.

The endless emergencies.

I had called them temporary.

Philip had called them patterns.

He had been right.

Marvin opened another section of the binder.

"Philip established a secondary trust."

"I don't understand."

"He placed nearly two million dollars into investments before he died."

I stared at him.

"...What?"

"You heard me."

"Two..."

"...million?"

"I managed it personally."

My chair scraped backward.

"I thought after taxes... after the insurance..."

"That was only part of your estate."

He nodded.

"The rest continued growing exactly as Philip instructed."

I couldn't breathe.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Philip made me promise."

He pointed to a notarized page.

"If Garrett ever showed genuine character, the trust would eventually become a shared family inheritance."

"And if he didn't?"

Marvin looked directly into my eyes.

"Then every penny belongs to you."

Silence.

Not one thousand.

Not one hundred thousand.

More than two million dollars.

Hidden.

Protected.

Waiting.

Waiting for the truth.

Marvin handed me another folder.

"This isn't all."

Inside were copies of bank transfers.

Loan applications.

Corporate filings.

One document caught my eye.

My own signature.

Except...

It wasn't mine.

I stared harder.

The signature looked almost identical.

Almost.

Someone had practiced it.

Again and again.

Until it looked convincing.

My blood ran cold.

"What is this?"

Marvin's voice lowered.

"I believe Garrett forged your signature."

The room disappeared.

"I..."

"...No."

"He used these documents while applying for several business credit lines."

"No..."

"He listed you as financial guarantor."

My breathing quickened.

"I never signed these."

"I know."

"There are twelve different applications."

"Twelve?"

"And every one names you as the emergency asset holder."

I felt physically sick.

"How much?"

Marvin didn't answer immediately.

Finally...

"Approximately one point three million dollars."

The number echoed inside my skull.

One point three million.

My son hadn't simply betrayed me.

He had gambled with my entire future.

Marvin leaned forward.

"I've already contacted an attorney."

"You did?"

"The moment the first forged document appeared."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I needed proof before destroying your relationship with Garrett."

He sighed.

"I kept hoping I was wrong."

"So did I."

Just then...

His assistant knocked.

"Mr. Ellis..."

"What is it?"

"There are two people in the lobby insisting they won't leave."

Marvin frowned.

"Who?"

She hesitated.

"A man named Garrett Collins."

"And his wife."

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

May you like

They had found me.

Already.
