Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Empire

By the following afternoon, the fallout from Sabrina’s arrest swept through the family business like a wildfire.
The emergency board meeting of Vance Development Corporation was called at 10:00 a.m. in the high-rise conference room overlooking the city skyline.
My father sat at the head of the long glass table, looking utterly broken. His hair was messy, his suit unbuttoned, and his hands trembled as he held a pen he couldn't even bring himself to use.
Around the table sat the six major institutional investors, bank representatives, and senior partners of the firm.
Standing at the front of the room, behind a large projector screen displaying the complete forensic breakdown of the company's financial devastation, was me.
Nolan stood near the door, wearing a sharp grey suit, his presence steady and protective.
"As you can see from page twelve of the audit report," I said, pointing my laser pointer at the red numbers on the screen, "Sabrina Vance used forged signatures from my father to authorize the sale of three core commercial properties. She then routed the capital through four intermediary entities before wiring it directly into her private offshore accounts."
The lead bank representative, a severe woman named Eleanor Sterling, slammed her folder shut.
"Arthur," Eleanor said, looking at my father with icy disapproval. "This is gross negligence. You gave your daughter complete executive authority without independent oversight. The bank is executing its right to recall our twenty-million-dollar credit line immediately."
My father put his head in his hands, his voice muffled by his palms. "We don't have twenty million dollars... the accounts are empty..."
"If the bank recalls the credit line," another board member chimed in nervously, "the company goes into Chapter 11 bankruptcy by Friday. We’ll lose everything."
My father slowly raised his head, looking at me with bloodshot, tear-filled eyes.
"Camille..." my father choked out, his voice raspy and pathetic. "Please... you used to be an investigator... you know these systems... can you save us? Can you save the family name?"
I looked at my father for a long, quiet moment.
I remembered how he had looked at me when I told him I wanted to leave corporate finance to spend more time raising Harper. I remembered how he had smiled when Sabrina called me "unambitious" and "emotionally unstable." I remembered how he stood in my kitchen while my daughter was dying, telling me to stop making a scene because "we are family."
"I am not going to save your family name, Dad," I said quietly, my voice ringing clear and steady through the silent room.
My father’s breath hitched. "Camille... please..."
"However," I continued, pressing a button on my laptop to change the slide on the screen, "I have negotiated a complete restructuring package with the Federal District Prosecutor and the Securities and Exchange Commission."
The board members sat up straight, leaning in.
"Under the terms of this agreement," I explained, "the federal court has executed an emergency freeze on all fourteen point six million dollars in Sabrina’s Cayman accounts. Those funds are being repatriated to the company escrow account as we speak."
A collective sigh of massive relief went through the room.
"Furthermore," I said, looking directly at my father, "under the provisions of the emergency shareholder charter, I am exercising my voting rights—combined with the proxy shares handed over to me by the court-appointed receiver—to remove Arthur Vance from his position as Chief Executive Officer."
My father gasped, stepping back in his chair as if he had been struck. "Camille! You're firing your own father?!"
"You didn't protect the company, Dad," I said softly, but without an ounce of regret. "And more importantly, you didn't protect your granddaughter. You let a predator run wild in your house because it was comfortable for you."
I signed the legal document on the podium and slid it across the glass table to the bank representative.
"As of 11:00 a.m. today," I announced, "I am stepping in as Interim Managing Director of Vance Development Corporation. My father will receive his standard pension retirement package, stripped of all voting rights and executive authority. The firm will honor all its debt obligations, and we will begin a complete restructuring of the board."
Eleanor Sterling looked at the document, then looked up at me, a rare, genuine smile touching her lips. She extended her hand across the table.
"Welcome back to the corporate world, Director Callahan," Eleanor said. "It seems the company is finally in capable hands."
May you like
I shook her hand firmly, feeling the weight of the past three years finally lift off my shoulders.
My father sat in his leather chair, weeping softly, completely powerless, as the board members stood up one by one to shake my hand and pledge their support to my new leadership.
