Chapter 4 - The Bail Hearing

Courtroom 302 of the County Courthouse was packed with reporters, news cameras, and curious spectators by 2:00 p.m.

The story of the wealthy real estate heiress who poisoned her seven-year-old niece at a birthday party had exploded across the local news, making front-page headlines nationwide:

REAL ESTATE HEIRESS ARRESTED IN BIRTHDAY POISONING FAMILY EMPIRE IN CHAOS AS ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGES FILED

I sat on the front row of the gallery, wearing a crisp dark suit, Nolan sitting right beside me.

Behind us sat my parents. My mother was weeping quietly into a handkerchief, while my father sat stiffly, staring at the floorboards, looking ten years older than he had twenty-four hours ago.

At the defense table sat Sabrina.

She was dressed in a dark blue jail jumpsuit, her hands handcuffed to a heavy leather waist restraint belt. Her high-society makeup was gone, revealing pale skin, dark circles under her eyes, and a sharp, desperate glint in her eyes.

Beside her sat Marcus Sterling, one of the most expensive defense attorneys in the state—a man known for getting wealthy criminals released on high-bail arrangements.

Judge William Thomas, a formidable judge with graying hair and piercing eyes, took the bench and slammed his wooden gavel down.

BANG!

"State versus Sabrina Vance," Judge Thomas announced. "Hearing on defense motion for pre-trial release and setting of bail."

Marcus Sterling immediately stood up, adjusting his thousand-dollar suit jacket.

"Your Honor," Sterling began, his voice booming smoothly through the courtroom amplifiers. "My client is a respected business leader, a lifelong resident of this city, and the chief operating officer of Vance Development Corporation. She has no prior criminal record. The allegations against her are based on a chaotic domestic incident involving a family argument and an unverified, low-quality home security video."

Sterling turned slightly, casting a dismissive glance toward me in the gallery.

"My client’s sister, Camille Callahan, has a history of emotional instability and has been involved in an ongoing feud over family assets," Sterling continued smoothly. "We contend that the video has been edited or misconstrued. My client poses zero flight risk and zero danger to the community. We request bail be set at five hundred thousand dollars, with home confinement at her residence."

Judge Thomas frowned, turning to the lead prosecutor, Assistant District Attorney Karen Miller.

"Prosecution's response?" Judge Thomas asked.

ADA Miller stood up, holding a thin blue folder. "Your Honor, the State strongly opposes bail. The victim in this case is a seven-year-old child who spent twelve hours in intensive care after receiving a lethal dose of crushed prescription nerve medication mixed into her drink. The home security footage is authenticated, high-definition 4K digital video with an unbroken chain of custody."

"A family argument, Your Honor!" Sterling interrupted loudly. "A tragic accident at worst! There is no proof of intent!"

"Your Honor," I spoke up, standing up from my seat in the gallery.

The entire courtroom turned to look at me. News cameras flashed instantly, their shutters clicking like a swarm of insects.

Marcus Sterling turned, scowling. "Your Honor! Spectators are not permitted to address the court!"

"I am not just a spectator, Your Honor," I said clearly, stepping past the gallery railing into the well of the court. "I am Camille Callahan. I am the mother of the victim, the former Senior Fraud Investigator for the Federal Reserve Bank, and a twenty-percent shareholder in Vance Development Corporation."

Judge Thomas looked at me over his glasses, raising a hand to quiet Sterling. "Mrs. Callahan, you are out of order, but given your status as the victim's mother and a shareholder, I will allow a brief statement before ruling on bail."

"Thank you, Your Honor," I said, walking directly to the prosecution table and placing my encrypted flash drive onto the wooden desk in front of ADA Miller.

"Mr. Sterling claims my sister has no motive and poses no flight risk," I said, turning my eyes to Sabrina, who was glaring at me with pure hatred from the defense chair. "What Mr. Sterling hasn't told this court—or his client's family—is that over the past eighteen months, Sabrina Vance has systematically embezzled fourteen point six million dollars from Vance Development Corporation."

A loud, collective gasp echoed through the courtroom.

My father sat up straight in the gallery, his mouth dropping open. "What?!"

"Here is the forensic financial audit," I continued, tapping the drive on the desk. "Complete with swift wire transfer receipts, shell company registration documents from the Cayman Islands, and tax evasion records. The audit proves that my sister was facing immediate exposure next week. Poisoning my daughter was not an emotional outburst. It was a calculated, pre-meditated strike to incapacitate me, cancel the audit, and secure total control of the remaining company assets."

Sabrina’s face went completely grey. "She's lying! She forged those documents!"

"Furthermore, Your Honor," I added, looking Judge Thomas dead in the eye, "the audit reveals that three days ago, Sabrina transferred two million dollars from her Cayman account to an offshore bank in Dubai—a country with no extradition treaty with the United States. She already has a private jet chartered from Santa Monica Airport scheduled to depart tonight at 11:00 p.m."

Marcus Vance looked at Sabrina, his jaw dropping. "Sabrina... is this true?"

Sabrina didn't answer. She pulled frantically against her leather waist belt, her chains clanking loudly as she screamed at me across the courtroom table.

"You ruined my life! You arrogant little rat! That money was mine! I built that company while you were sitting at home playing mommy! It was mine!"

Judge Thomas’s face turned into dark thunder. He slammed his gavel down three times in rapid succession.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

"Silence in the court!" Judge Thomas roared.

The courtroom fell dead quiet, save for Sabrina’s ragged, panting breaths.

Judge Thomas looked down at Sabrina with absolute contempt.

"In light of the overwhelming evidence of pre-meditation, the severe nature of the charges, the massive financial fraud, and the clear and present flight risk demonstrated by the defendant," Judge Thomas pronounced, his voice echoing off the high stone walls, "the defense motion for bail is DENIED."

BANG!

"The defendant will remain in custody at the County Detention Facility without bail pending trial," Judge Thomas ruled. "Next case."

Two heavy-set sheriff's deputies grabbed Sabrina by her arms, lifting her from her chair.

As they dragged her through the side exit door, she kicked and screamed, her perfect composure completely shattered into ugly, hysterical weeping that faded down the cold concrete hallway.
