Chapter 5 - The Public Execution

Within forty-eight hours, the story of the Thorne family empire exploded across national news networks, legal blogs, and social media platforms.

The video footage from my lapel camera—showing Julian holding the baseball bat on the rain-soaked porch, Miriam pointing a revolver, and Arthur threatening federal officers—was leaked to major media outlets by an anonymous source within the State Attorney General’s office.

Over twenty million people watched the clip within twelve hours.

The hashtag #JusticeForAudrey trended number one nationwide. The public outrage was swift and merciless. Protesters swarmed the state capitol building demanding the immediate resignation of every judge connected to Arthur Thorne’s political action committee.

Sitting in a private room at the regional medical center three days later, Audrey watched the news anchor on the wall-mounted television:

"...Federal prosecutors have officially seized over forty million dollars in illicit assets belonging to the Thorne Judicial Foundation. Former state political broker Arthur Thorne, his wife Miriam, and prominent local physician Dr. Harrison Sterling face multiple counts of federal racketeering, conspiracy, and extortion. Meanwhile, Julian Thorne remains held without bail on charges of felony kidnapping, aggravated assault, and witness tampering..."

Audrey rested back against the white pillows, her swollen eye finally opening, revealing her bright hazel gaze. Her arm was wrapped in a soft brace, but her color had returned, her smile gentle and whole.

I sat in the armchair beside her bed, peeling an apple with a small pocketknife, just as I had done when she was a little girl sitting in my garage while I worked on truck engines.

"The lawyers called this morning, Dad," Audrey said softly, reaching out to touch my arm. "The annulment papers were signed by the judge an hour ago. The Thorne name is completely erased from my record."

"Good," I said, handing her a slice of apple. "It never belonged on you in the first place."

The door to the room opened softly, and Marcus Vance walked in carrying a heavy leather briefcase and two cups of hot coffee. He set one cup on my tray table and gave Audrey a warm, respectful nod.

"How are you holding up, kiddo?" Marcus asked.

"Better than the Thornes, I hear," Audrey smiled faintly.

"That’s an understatement," Marcus chuckled, pulling a stack of legal documents from his briefcase. "Arthur tried to apply for bail this morning using his oceanfront property as collateral. The federal judge denied it in under thirty seconds. Said he was a flight risk and an absolute danger to society. Julian’s court-appointed lawyer is already trying to negotiate a twenty-year plea deal to avoid a life sentence."

Marcus turned to me, his expression becoming serious and filled with deep respect.

"The Governor called my office an hour ago, Thomas," Marcus said. "He wants to reinstate your senior investigator credentials. Offered you the head position of the Special Task Force on Judicial Corruption."

I looked down at the coffee cup in my hands, then over at my daughter, whose eyes were shining with pride.

"I retired for a reason, Marcus," I said quietly. "To take care of my family."

"Dad," Audrey spoke up, her voice firm and encouraging. "You spent twelve years protecting people who couldn't protect themselves. You saved me because you never stopped being who you are. If you want to take the job... I want you to take it."

I looked at her for a long moment, seeing the strength that she had inherited not just from me, but from her mother. The fear that had gripped her in that terrible mansion was gone, replaced by a quiet, unshakeable resilience.

"Only on one condition," I said, looking back at Marcus.

"Name it," Marcus replied instantly.

"Audrey comes on as senior financial analyst for the task force," I said. "She found those offshore ledgers when three federal audits missed them. She has a better eye for corruption than half your team."

Audrey’s face lit up with a brilliant, breathless smile.

Marcus laughed out loud, extending his hand across the table. "Deal. The state couldn't ask for a better team."
