Chapter 3 - The Price of Silence

Dr. Sterling spun around, dropping the glass syringe onto the hardwood floor where it shattered, liquid soaking into the rug. Miriam Thorne let out a sharp gasp, stumbling backward against the nightstand.

"Dad..." Audrey choked out, her voice barely a whisper, blood trickling from the corner of her cracked lower lip. "The drive... under the flooring... they found it..."

"Shut up!" Miriam screamed, her elegant face twisting into a grotesque mask of rage. She reached into her silk robe pocket and pulled out a small pearl-handled revolver, pointing it directly at my chest with shaking hands. "You filthy little mechanic! You ruined everything! She was supposed to sign the non-disclosure agreements tomorrow!"

I didn't pause. I took two deliberate steps forward, completely ignoring the barrel aimed at my heart.

"You don't know how to take the safety off that gun, Miriam," I said, my voice completely devoid of fear.

Her thumb fumbled frantically with the frame. Before she could locate the lever, I closed the distance, grabbed her wrist, twisted it upward, and extracted the revolver from her grip in a single, fluid motion. I tossed the weapon onto the bed, grabbed Dr. Sterling by his silk necktie, and slammed him against the wall so hard the hanging oil paintings rattled.

"Get on the floor," I barked into the doctor's ear. "Now!"

Sterling collapsed to his knees, shaking, hands raised over his head.

I pulled a heavy tactical knife from my belt and sliced through the thick plastic zip-ties binding my daughter’s wrists. The moment her arms were free, Audrey threw them around my neck, burying her face into my wet canvas jacket, sobbing violently.

"I have you, sweetheart," I whispered, holding her tight against my chest, feeling her small frame tremble. "I'm right here. Nobody touches you ever again."

"Dad," she gasped, her hands clutching my shoulders. "It wasn't just Julian hitting me. I found the financial ledgers for Arthur’s judicial foundation. He’s been taking bribes from the offshore construction consortiums to rule against the environmental safety lawsuits. They’re laundering millions through Julian’s logistics firm!"

The door behind us slammed wide open.

Julian Thorne stood in the doorway, drenched in sweat, holding a heavy black 9mm handgun. His father, Arthur, stood right behind him, his face purple with fury as police sirens blared continuously from the driveway below.

"Get away from her!" Julian yelled, raising the firearm, his hands shaking erratically. "She’s my wife! She signed a prenuptial agreement that gives us control over her intellectual property and personal records!"

"She’s my daughter," I said, slowly turning around to put my body completely between Julian’s gun and Audrey. "And your prenuptial agreement doesn't cover felony aggravated assault, kidnapping, and state corruption."

"You think those troopers downstairs can touch us?" Arthur Thorne shouted, stepping beside his son, his voice laced with terrifying arrogance. "I appointed three of the circuit judges in this county! The State Supreme Court Chief Justice attends my dinner parties every month! You hand over that thumb drive right now, or you don't leave this room alive!"

"You're right, Arthur," I said quietly, pulling my phone from my pocket and tapping the screen once. "The county judges are in your pocket. That’s why I didn't send the files to the local court."

A heavy silence descended on the room, save for the sound of rain beating against the roof.

"Who did you send it to?" Julian stammered, his finger tightening on the trigger.

May you like

"The Federal Bureau of Investigation, Public Corruption Division in Washington," I answered, a cold, lethal smile spreading across my face. "Sent three minutes ago. Along with the live video stream currently recording from my lapel camera."

Julian looked down at the dark metal button pinned to my jacket pocket. A tiny red LED light was blinking steadily.
