Chapter 5 - The Safe Haven

Six Months Later
The morning rain had passed, leaving behind a clear blue sky above our new estate in upstate New York—far removed from the corruption and violence of the Manhattan underworld.
The house was surrounded by rolling green hills, blooming apple orchards, and bright sunshine.
In the gardens behind the main house, Emma was running through the grass, her blue moon-print pajamas long replaced by a bright yellow summer dress. She was chasing a small golden retriever puppy I had bought her for her fourth birthday.
I sat on the wide stone porch, drinking a fresh cup of coffee, reading through the final legal dissolution of the Rossi family syndicate. With the assistance of Lena Ortiz, the dark assets had been liquidated and converted into a multi-million-dollar charitable trust supporting orphaned children and maternal healthcare across the state.
Lena Ortiz walked out onto the porch, carrying a folder of court documents.
"The judge signed the final adoption and status papers twenty minutes ago, Lorenzo," Lena said, offering me a rare, genuine smile as she handed me the seal. "Emma Elizabeth Duca is officially recognized as your sole legal heir and daughter under state and federal law."

I took the paper, feeling a profound sense of relief washing over me like a warm wave. "Thank you, Lena. For everything."
"Don't thank me," Lena said, turning to look at Emma playing in the sun. "Thank Sophia. She had the courage to plan for a future she knew she wouldn't live to see."
