Chapter 5 - The Song in the Garden

Two weeks later, the yellow house in the quiet suburbs of Denver was buzzing with activity.

Contractors hired by Julian had spent the last seven days completely renovating the small cottage—repairing the radiator that used to cough, installing new insulation, expanding the kitchen, and planting a vibrant garden of sunflowers and roses in the front yard.

Clara stood on the newly painted porch, holding a mug of warm tea, watching the afternoon sun cast a warm golden glow over the quiet street.

Down in the garden, four-year-old Lucy was running through the green grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Julian had brought over as a gift. Her joyful, ringing laughter echoed across the yard—a sound that had been absent from her life for far too long.

A sleek black sedan pulled up into the driveway, and Julian stepped out, wearing a comfortable sweater and jeans instead of his usual corporate suit.

"Mr. Winslow!" Lucy squealed, abandoning her chase with the puppy and running across the grass, throwing her small arms around his knees.

Julian laughed—a warm, deep sound—and easily lifted the little girl into his arms, tossing her gently into the air before setting her on his shoulder. "How many butterflies today, Lucy?"

"Sixteen!" Lucy cheered, holding up both hands with all ten fingers spread, then tapping her head. "And zero hiccups from Mama!"

Julian smiled, looking up toward the porch where Clara stood watching them.

He walked up the steps, setting Lucy down so she could run back to the puppy. Clara stepped forward, her face bright, her eyes clear and full of life.

"The lawyers called this morning, Julian," Clara said softly, her voice filled with quiet wonder. "The estate transfer is finalized. The Apex corridor deed has been leased to the state for public transport development. I... I'm a wealthy woman now."

"You were always a wealthy woman, Clara," Julian said gently, leaning against the porch railing close to her. "You had courage, love, and a daughter who protected you when the world was cold. The money just gives you the room to breathe."

Clara looked out at the garden, her fingers resting against the warm ceramic of her mug. "I don't think I ever thanked you properly. You didn't have to get involved in our lives. You could have just ignored a four-year-old girl at a closet door."

Julian turned to face her, his expression softening into an intense, genuine warmth.

"I've spent ten years building a fortune, Clara," Julian admitted quietly. "My house was huge, my bank accounts were full, but until three weeks ago, my life was completely quiet. When Lucy stopped me in that hallway, she didn't just save you—she saved me from turning into a man like Harrison."

Clara looked up into his dark eyes, her breath catching slightly as she felt the deep, unspoken connection between them.

Julian reached out, his broad, warm hand gently touching her cheek, his thumb brushing over her soft skin. Clara didn't pull away; she leaned into his touch, closing her eyes for a sweet, peaceful moment.

"You don't have to work for me anymore, Clara," Julian murmured softly. "But I hope you and Lucy won't leave my life."

Clara opened her eyes, a radiant, beautiful smile breaking across her face. "We aren't going anywhere, Julian."
