Chapter 3 - Shadows Over the Estate

Julian stepped into his private study, closing the heavy oak door behind him, and answered the call.

"Harrison," Julian said, his tone turning instantly to ice.

"Julian," Harrison Vance’s smooth, arrogant voice boomed over the speaker. "I hear you're preparing the final paperwork for the Apex Logistics merger. I wanted to offer my congratulations... and a quiet word of advice."

"I don't take advice from men who steal intellectual property, Harrison," Julian replied coldly.

"Careful, Julian," Harrison chuckled darkly. "You think you have all your pieces on the board, but you always miss the small details. I hear you've taken a personal interest in your residential staff lately. Specifically, a woman named Clara."

Julian’s grip on his phone tightened until his knuckles turned white. "What does my household staff have to do with you?"

"Clara Vance is my late brother's estranged daughter," Harrison revealed, his tone dripping with malice. "Her father, Arthur, was the black sheep of our family—gave up his inheritance to be a blue-collar nobody. But when Arthur died eight months ago, he left behind a small trust deed for a parcel of land in northern Colorado. Land that sitting right on top of Apex Logistics' primary transport corridor."

The pieces connected in Julian’s mind with terrifying speed.

"Arthur didn't die broke," Julian realized aloud, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "He owned the key access point for your entire commercial pipeline."

"And dear little Clara doesn't even know it exists," Harrison laughed. "She thinks she's just paying off funeral bills. I've been managing her father's debt collection through my subsidiary agencies to keep her desperate, weak, and distracted until the statute of limitations runs out on the deed transfer next month. But now she's living in your house, Julian. And that makes things... complicated."

"You're harassing a grieving woman and her child for a property deed?" Julian snarled.

"Business is business, Julian," Harrison said smoothly. "Tell her to sign the estate release forms I sent to her apartment, or I'll have the collection agencies force an immediate asset seizure on her rented house and garnish every cent she earns for the next ten years. Keep your mouth shut, let the merger go through, and everyone wins."

The line went dead.

Julian stood in the center of his study, his chest heaving with silent fury.

He looked out the French doors leading to the garden. Clara was sitting on a wooden bench under the old oak tree, holding Lucy on her lap, gently swinging her back and forth as the afternoon sun filtered through the leaves. For the first time in months, Clara’s shoulders weren't hunched; she was listening as Lucy pointed at a butterfly in the grass.

Harrison Vance had spent eight months crushing this woman’s spirit, using her grief and her love for her child as a weapon to steal her rightful inheritance.

Julian turned to his desk, picked up his private line, and dialed his chief security director, Marcus.

"Marcus," Julian commanded, his voice cold as steel. "I want a full financial audit on Harrison Vance's debt collection subsidiaries. Find every legal violation, every harassment filing, and every suppressed estate record connected to Arthur Vance. We are going to war."
