Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Untouchables

At 6:00 AM the following morning—exactly twenty-four hours after Gavin Cole was scheduled to be marched into the execution chamber—the Texas State Capitol building was under total lockdown.

Live television broadcasts across the nation showed federal agents crashing through the heavy mahogany doors of District Attorney Richard Miller’s private residence in Austin. Miller was led out in handcuffs, wearing a silk bathrobe, his face pale with shock as reporters shouted questions over the flashing police lights.

Simultaneously, FBI SWAT teams surrounded the lavish estate of Judge Julian Vance.

Vance stood behind his massive bulletproof windows on the second floor, holding a glass of scotch, watching the armored vehicles tear up his manicured front lawn. He reached into his desk drawer for his silver cane, unscrewing the handle to retrieve a small USB drive containing millions in offshore accounts.

Before he could pull it out, the double doors of his office exploded off their hinges.

"DON'T MOVE! HANDS IN THE AIR!"

Agent Reyes stepped through the smoke, her gun trained directly on Vance’s chest. Behind her walked Warden Robert Mitchell, holding a sealed evidence bag containing the gold signet ring found in the cedar chest.

"Julian Vance," Reyes stated with razor-sharp authority. "You are under arrest for the capital murder of Sarah Cole, obstruction of justice, conspiracy to commit murder, and racketeering."

Vance slowly lowered his glass onto the desk, trying to maintain his aristocratic air. "You have nothing, Agent. A buried jacket and a ring mean nothing. My legal team will have this warrant thrown out before lunch."

"Your legal team won't be joining you, Julian," Warden Mitchell said, stepping forward with a cold smile. "Because ten minutes ago, the Governor reviewed the decrypted ledger files from your cedar vault. You weren't just laundering money. You framed seven different innocent men over the last decade to seize their land for the highway expansion project."

Vance’s arrogant expression shattered. His knees buckled, and he collapsed into his executive leather chair as agents forced his arms behind his back, snapping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.

"One more thing, Judge," Mitchell whispered in Vance’s ear as they dragged him out. "Gavin Cole’s daughter sends her regards."
