Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Cedar

"Hold!" Mitchell shouted, rushing to the edge of the muddy pit.

Two forensic investigators climbed down into the trench with shovels, scraping away the remaining wet earth. The wooden coffin came into view—but it wasn't the standard bronze casket paid for by the state assistance fund five years ago. It was a dark, heavy cedar box bound with custom iron straps.

"That's not the box she was buried in," Gavin gasped, taking a step forward until his chains clanked loudly. "The state gave her a cheap particle-board casket! I saw it at her funeral!"

"Get the crowbars down there!" Mitchell ordered.

The investigators jammed heavy steel bars under the rusted iron latches. With a sickening screech of twisting metal and splintering wood, the lid was pried open.

The flashlights illuminated the interior.

The crowd of officers gasped in unison.

The casket did not contain Sarah Cole’s remains.

Instead, laid out inside the moisture-sealed cedar chest were three massive, black leather-bound ledgers, dozens of encrypted hard drives, and a preserved, sealed plastic bag containing a blood-stained suit jacket with a golden signet ring resting in its breast pocket.

Engraved clearly on the ring's face were the initials: J.A.V.

"My God..." one of the marshals whispered, stepping back. "It’s a complete extortion vault."

Gavin fell to his knees in the wet mud, sobbing openly into his rain-slicked hands. "She hid it... she swapped the caskets before they buried her... she knew they would come for her body if she kept it at home..."

Warden Mitchell climbed down into the pit, pulling on blue latex gloves. He carefully lifted the heavy plastic bag containing the suit jacket and held it under the spotlight.

"Look at the tag on the neck," Mitchell said, pointing his pen at the label.

The tailor’s tag inside the jacket bore the embroidered name: Honorable Julian A. Vance.

And dried across the left lapel were clear dark spatter patterns—blood evidence that had never been analyzed, never entered into trial, and hidden five feet beneath the earth for half a decade.

"Warden!" a young guard shouted from the top of the pit, holding a buzzing satellite phone. "We've got trouble! Multiple unmarked black SUVs just pulled up to the main cemetery gate! They're heavily armed—they claim to have a federal warrant signed by District Attorney Miller to seize this site immediately!"

Mitchell looked up at the rim of the pit. High-powered headlights cut through the heavy rain, blinding the team inside the grave. Headlights from vehicles that didn't belong to the state police.

"They're not here to seize evidence," Gavin yelled, scrambling to his feet. "They're here to burn it!"
