Chapter 6 - Choosing the Light

Two weeks later, the autumn rain finally cleared, replaced by crisp, brilliant November sunlight that washed over the manicured lawns of the Moretti estate.
Inside the grand parlor, Sofia Delgado—now fully recovered and wearing a neat, elegant dress—sat quietly with Rosa, sipping tea and smiling softly.
Upstairs in the private study, the door was propped open.
Emma stood on a small step stool beside Alessandro’s massive mahogany desk. She wasn't wearing an oversized gray janitor’s uniform today. She wore a bright yellow cardigan and a matching floral dress.
In her hand, she held a brand-new, smaller blue spray bottle.
“Mr. Moretti?” Emma asked, tilting her head.
Alessandro looked up from his contracts, a soft, genuine smile breaking across his stern face—a smile that no one outside this room would ever be privileged to see.
“Yes, Emma?”
“I finished dusting the bookshelf,” she announced proudly, hopping down from the step stool and smoothing out her skirt. “And Mom says we’re moving into a nice apartment near the park next week. But I told her... I told her I still want to come visit you on Saturdays.”
Alessandro stood up, walked around the desk, and knelt down on one knee for the second time in his life. He reached out and gently tapped the tip of her nose.
“It’s a deal, Emma,” Alessandro said softly, the cold armor of his past life finally shedding away completely. “Every Saturday. And you don’t even have to clean.”
For forty-six years, Alessandro Moretti had believed that fear was the only shield worth carrying, and that coldness was the price of survival. But as he looked into the bright, fearless eyes of the little girl who had walked into his dark world with a cleaning rag and a spray bottle, he realized something profound.

Power wasn't about the darkness you controlled.
It was about the light you chose to protect.
