Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the Syndicate

Three days later, Sofia Delgado was resting comfortably in a private recovery suite at Lenox Hill Hospital, surrounded by fresh flowers arranged by Rosa Bellini and monitored by the city's finest specialists. Her medical bills were paid in full, and a permanent, high-yield trust fund had been anonymously established in Emma’s name.
For Alessandro Moretti, however, peace was never permitted to last long.
It was midnight when Marco walked unannounced into the estate's study, his expression grim, carrying a heavy encrypted tablet.
“Boss, we have a problem,” Marco said, placing the tablet on the mahogany desk. “Donato is making his move.”
Alessandro didn't look up from his espresso. Salvatore Donato was the ruthless, unpredictable head of the rival Brooklyn syndicate—a man who had spent years trying to muscle in on Moretti shipping routes. “Explain.”
“Donato heard about Vance getting wiped out. He thinks you’re soft,” Marco said, tapping the screen to bring up a live security feed. “He thinks because you spent three days playing nursemaid to a cleaning woman’s kid, your grip on the council is slipping. He’s calling an emergency sit-down tomorrow night at the docks. And... he knows about Emma.”
Alessandro’s head snapped up. The dark, piercing intensity in his eyes returned tenfold, colder and sharper than a surgeon’s scalpel.
“What did you say?”
“He knows where Sofia is hospitalized. He knows Emma is staying at the estate while her mother recovers,” Marco said, his voice tightening with suppressed rage. “Donato’s sending a message. He thinks he can use the child to force you to cede the shipping docks on the West Side.”
The room plunged into an absolute, deathly vacuum of sound.
Alessandro stood up so violently his leather chair rolled back and slammed against the wall. The cold, calculated mafia boss—the man who ruled New York’s underworld with an iron fist—was gone. In his place stood a terrifying, singular force of nature.
“Call the captains,” Alessandro whispered, his voice dangerously low.
“Boss?”
“Tell every loyal soldier in the five boroughs to mobilize,” Alessandro ordered, his eyes burning with a dark, terrifying fire. “Tell Donato I accept his sit-down. But tell him we aren’t meeting at the docks.”

“Where?”
“In hell.”
