Chapter 7 - The True Test

Three weeks later, the boardroom on the top floor of Grant Financial Group was dead silent.

Senior executives in sharp charcoal suits sat around the massive glass conference table, clutching their tablets and staring nervously down at their notes. At the head of the table sat Nathaniel Grant. He looked immaculate—hair neatly styled, navy suit tailored to perfection, posture absolute.

But there was a subtle difference in his demeanor. The cold, impenetrable aura that had once defined him had softened at the edges. His phone, which used to buzz incessantly with defensive texts and frantic updates, sat face down and ignored.

"That concludes the Q3 projections," the Chief Financial Officer stammered, closing his leather binder. "Unless... Mr. Grant, do you have any questions?"

Nathaniel didn't answer immediately. He was looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the Manhattan skyline. Below them, the city moved in its usual frantic rhythm. But today, it didn't look cold.

Before Nathaniel could speak, the heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open with a dramatic, authorized click.

All twenty executives snapped their heads around in absolute horror. No one interrupted Nathaniel Grant’s executive committee meetings. Ever.

Olivia, standing in the doorway, didn't even flinch. She simply stepped aside, holding open the door for two special visitors.

Emma walked in first, wearing a brand-new pink coat, a matching knit hat, and carrying a small, perfectly clean unicorn backpack. Behind her walked Rebecca, dressed in a simple emerald-green dress and a warm wool trench coat, looking every bit the brilliant, grounded woman Olivia had promised she was.

"Excuse me, gentlemen," Olivia announced brightly, her voice echoing through the silent boardroom. "Brought the executive consultants. They have notes on your quarterly performance."

A collective gasp of confusion rippled through the board members.

Nathaniel didn't look angry. In fact, a slow, radiant smile broke across his face—a smile so entirely genuine that several junior vice presidents looked as though they might faint from shock.

"Dismissed," Nathaniel said smoothly, standing up from his leather chair and buttoning his jacket. "Meeting's over. The consultants have arrived."

Within thirty seconds, the boardroom was entirely cleared of executives, leaving only Nathaniel, Rebecca, and Emma standing beneath the grand crystal chandelier.

Emma trotted straight across the polished marble floor, stopping right in front of Nathaniel’s polished shoes. She reached into her backpack, pulled out a small, slightly squished chocolate chip cookie wrapped in a napkin, and handed it up to him.

"For you," Emma announced proudly. "Because you didn't fire Mommy's friend Olivia."

Nathaniel knelt down, perfectly unconcerned about his expensive trousers touching the marble, and accepted the cookie with the solemn reverence of a man receiving the crown jewels of an empire.

"Thank you, Chef Emma," Nathaniel said solemnly, taking a bite. "It's exceptional."

He stood up, his eyes locking onto Rebecca, who was walking slowly toward him across the room, a soft, knowing smile playing on her lips.

"You know," Rebecca murmured as she stopped just an inch away from him, "your corporate headquarters are very shiny, Nathaniel. But I think I prefer the Bleecker Street kitchen."

Nathaniel reached out, gently sliding his hand into hers, lacing his fingers securely through hers.

"So do I," Nathaniel said quietly, pulling her just a fraction closer as Emma happily ran off to inspect the boardroom's panoramic view of the city. "So do I."
