Chapter 13 - The Resignation

The following Monday morning, the executive boardroom of Grant Financial Group was packed to maximum capacity.

Every senior vice president, every board member, and the entire legal team sat in tense anticipation. Rumors had been flying through the financial district all weekend. Whispers of a hostile internal shakeup, an emergency restructuring, or an unprecedented corporate merger had the entire C-suite on edge.

The heavy oak doors opened.

Nathaniel Grant walked in. But he wasn't carrying his usual stack of financial reports. He wore a crisp navy suit, his posture calm, relaxed, and entirely liberated. Behind him walked Olivia, carrying a single manila folder with a small, triumphant smile playing on her lips.

Nathaniel sat down at the head of the table. He looked around the room, meeting the eyes of men and women who had spent years fearing his cold, analytical precision.

"Good morning," Nathaniel said smoothly.

The CFO cleared his throat nervously. "Mr. Grant... the emergency meeting. Is there a crisis with the European acquisitions?"

"No," Nathaniel replied calmly. He opened the manila folder, pulled out a single sheet of heavy cream paper, and laid it flat on the glass table. "There is no crisis. In fact, for the first time in a decade, things are entirely under control."

He slid the paper toward the center of the table.

"Effective immediately, I am stepping down as Chief Executive Officer of Grant Financial Group."

Total, deafening silence hit the room. Mouths dropped open. Tablets slipped from shaking fingers. The CFO looked as though he had just been struck by lightning.

"Step down?" the senior legal counsel choked out. "Nathaniel—Mr. Grant, you can't be serious! Who is going to helm the board? Who will manage the equity portfolios?"

"The board is fully capable of managing the portfolios," Nathaniel said, standing up from his chair and buttoning his jacket with absolute finality. "As for my successor, I am appointing Olivia Vance as interim CEO. She has more common sense, emotional intelligence, and business acumen than this entire room combined."

Olivia blinked, a rare flash of shock crossing her face before a broad, brilliant grin spread across her lips. She stepped forward, picked up the folder, and nodded firmly. "Consider it handled, Nathaniel."

Nathaniel didn't wait for the protests, the frantic questions, or the corporate panic to catch up. He turned his back on the glass tower, walked out of the boardroom for the very last time, and stepped into the elevator—heading down toward a life that was finally real.
