Chapter 6 - A Table Built for Four

That evening, the grand dining room beneath the massive crystal chandelier looked completely different.

The cold, oppressive shadows were gone, replaced by warm, glowing sunlight streaming through the high arched windows. The heavy mahogany table built for twenty no longer felt absurdly large or empty.

Two guards still stood outside the grand double doors—Marcus and Lev—but their weapons were holstered, and for the first time since I had hired them, both men had genuine smiles on their faces as they watched the family inside.

At the head of the table sat four plates, fully set with delicious, warm food prepared by our staff.

I sat at the head of the table. To my right sat Lily, her face glowing with happiness as she ate her dinner. To my left sat Grace, looking beautiful and serene, sharing a quiet smile with me across the table.

And right beside me, sitting proudly in the high chair that had once stood empty for two agonizing years, was Amara.

The little girl reached for a buttered roll, exactly as she had done on that fateful evening just two weeks ago. She took a big bite, chewed happily, and then looked up at me.

"Mister?" Amara asked softly.

"Yes, Amara?" I replied, setting my fork down—not out of shock this time, but with absolute peace in my heart.

"Are you still sad?" she asked innocently.

I looked around the table. I looked at my sister-in-law Grace, who had risked everything to heal our broken family. I looked at my precious daughter Lily, whose laughter filled the room that had once known only grief. And I looked at the brave little three-year-old girl who had dared to walk past armed guards just to offer a lonely man her company.

I reached out and gently laid my hand over Lily’s small hand, while using my other hand to pat Amara’s shoulder.

"No, Amara," I said, my voice thick with emotion, a soft, genuine smile spreading across my face. "I am not sad anymore."

Amara grinned broadly, turning to Lily. "See? I told you! Eating together makes everyone happy!"

Lily giggled, reaching across the table to clink her small juice cup against Amara's. Grace laughed softly, shaking her head at her daughter's boundless spirit.

I picked up my fork and took a bite of my dinner, listening to the joyful chatter of the children and the warm conversation of family.

My name is Julian Hale.

I still have more money than I can spend, and I still possess the power to make powerful men tremble. But as I sat at my grand table, surrounded by the people I loved, I realized that none of those things mattered.

My empire wasn't my business, my money, or my fear.

My empire was right here, sitting around a table built for twenty—a table where no one would ever have to eat alone again.
