Chapter 4 - The Fall of Villa D'Ombre

Marcus slammed his palm down on the detonator switch.
A high-frequency electromagnetic pulse erupted from our device, instantly frying every circuit board, light bulb, and electronic lock within a two-hundred-yard radius.
Above us, the classical music cut out instantly. The brilliant crystal chandeliers exploded in a shower of sparks, plunging the subterranean ballroom into pitch-black chaos.
Screams echoed through the darkness. Panic erupted among the wealthy bidders as the electronic doors automatically failed, locking everyone inside the pitch-black vault.
"Breaching now!" I yelled.
Lev slapped a ring of plastic explosive onto the concrete ceiling above us. We ducked behind the brick archway as the charge detonated with a thunderous BOOM, blowing a six-foot hole directly through the stage floor above.
Debris and dust rained down. I didn't wait for the smoke to clear. I vaulted up through the shattered floorboards, landing smoothly on the stage in the middle of the darkness.
Equipped with night-vision goggles, the world turned into a sharp, neon-green battleground. I drew my weapons, my eyes instantly locking onto the small shape cowering near the podium.
Lily.
A guard was reaching for her, his pistol drawn. Before he could raise his arm, I fired two suppressed rounds into his chest. He dropped like a stone.
"Lily!" I shouted, dropping my night-vision goggles so she could see my face in the dim emergency lighting that began to flicker on.
The little girl looked up through the dust, her face pale with terror. She stared at me, her eyes widening as memories buried deep within her young mind suddenly resurfaced.
"Daddy?" she whimpered, her voice trembling.
That single word shattered two years of pain.
I reached her in two strides, scooping her up into my arms and pulling her tight against my chest. Her small hands gripped my jacket collar fiercely, burying her face into my neck.
"I've got you, baby," I whispered, tears stinging my eyes for the first time in decades. "I've got you. You're safe."
"Julian! Look out!" Grace screamed as she climbed up through the floor breach behind me.
I spun around just as The Architect emerged from behind the shattered podium, a heavy caliber pistol aimed directly at my head. His silver venetian mask was cracked, revealing a scar that ran down his cheek—a scar I had given him ten years ago in Chicago.
"Arthur," I growled, recognizing my former business partner turned mortal enemy.
"You should have stayed dead, Julian!" Arthur snarled, his finger tightening on the trigger. "You built an empire, and you thought you were untouchable! I took your wife, I took your child, and now I take your life!"
Before Arthur could pull the trigger, a bright red laser dot appeared directly on his forehead.
A deafening sniper shot shattered the high stained-glass windows of the upper balcony. A heavy round ripped through Arthur's shoulder, spinning him around and knocking his weapon from his hand.
Swiss Intelligence strike teams descended from ropes through the shattered skylights, flashbangs exploding across the room, blinding the remaining syndicate guards.
"Federal agents! On the ground! Drop your weapons!" automated megaphones bellowed.
"Marcus, Lev, cover our egress!" I yelled, keeping Lily wrapped tightly in my coat. "Grace, through the aqueduct!"
We dived back down into the floor breach as heavy gunfire erupted between the Swiss tactical forces and Arthur’s mercenaries. Crawling back through the aqueduct was twice as difficult with a terrified child, but Lily didn't make a sound. She clung to me like a protective cocoon, trusting me completely despite the nightmare unfolding around us.
We emerged onto the foggy shores of Lake Geneva just as Swiss police helicopters swarmed the skies above the Villa D'Ombre, their searchlights cutting through the mist.
Our electric boat was waiting. We leaped aboard, the engine humming quietly as we sped away into the night, leaving the burning estate behind us.
I sat in the stern of the boat, holding Lily tightly in my lap. Grace sat across from us, wiping soot from her face, tears of relief flowing freely down her cheeks.
Lily pulled back slightly, looking up into my face with big, tear-filled eyes. She reached out a small, trembling hand and touched my jaw.
"Daddy... you came," she whispered. "The bad man said you forgot about me."
"I could never forget you, Lily," I said, my voice cracking with overwhelming love. "Not for a single second. I searched for you every day."
She looked over at Grace, her brow furrowing slightly. "Auntie Grace?"
Grace broke down into sobs, dropping to her knees on the boat floor and taking Lily's small hand. "Yes, sweetie. It's Auntie Grace. You're safe now. We're all going home."
Lily smiled softly, leaning her head back against my chest. "Is Amara there?"
I blinked in surprise. "You know Amara?"
Lily nodded sleepily against my collarbone. "The bad man had pictures of her... he said if I was bad, he would take her too. I tried to be good, Daddy."

A cold rage flickered in my heart toward the men who had terrified my family, but looking down at my daughter, safe in my arms, that rage melted into a deep, profound peace. The war was over. The Architect was captured or dead, his syndicate shattered by the international raid.
For the first time in two years, the darkness in my life had been driven away.
