CHAPTER 2: THE MAN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

Ethan stared at the photograph.

The resemblance was shocking.

Same dark hair.

Same height.

Same smile.

For a moment, he thought someone had altered the image.

Then he noticed the date.

Six years earlier.

One year before he had even met Olivia.

His hands began shaking.

"Who is this?"

Emma looked down.

"My daddy."

The room went silent.

"What happened to him?"

The little girl hugged herself.

"He died."

Ethan closed his eyes.

Everything suddenly became much more complicated.

This wasn't a secret child from an affair.

This was something else.

Something Olivia had hidden for years.

"Why didn't your mom tell me about you?"

Emma looked confused.

"She said people always leave."

The words broke something inside him.

Children rarely lie.

They simply repeat what they've heard.

Ethan sat quietly.

Trying to understand.

Trying to reconcile the woman he loved with the enormous secret she had kept.

Then Emma whispered:

"Grandma said Mom was scared."

"Scared of what?"

"That you'd stop loving us."

The answer hurt more than anger would have.

Because it sounded painfully human.

Not malicious.

Just afraid.

Then the bathroom door suddenly opened.

Olivia stood there.

Still wearing her wedding gown.

Still holding her bouquet.

But all the color had drained from her face.

She had seen the photograph.

She had seen Emma.

And she knew the secret was over.
