Chapter 6 - The White Keys of Home

The afternoon sun streamed through the wide windows of a newly renovated, four-bedroom coastal home overlooking the harbor in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

The air smelled of fresh ocean salt, baking vanilla cookies, and red roses.

In the spacious living room, a grand, dark-rosewood Steinway piano sat on an antique rug near the French balcony doors.

Seven-year-old Clara sat on the piano bench, wearing a bright green dress, her dark hair tied in two neat braids. Her small fingers danced across the white keys, playing a simple, beautiful melody that her mother had written for her years ago.

Sitting beside her on the bench, turning the pages of the sheet music, was Gabriel.

He had officially resigned as CEO of Mendes Corp three months prior, transferring his controlling shares into a charitable foundation dedicated to supporting single mothers and orphanages across New England. Julian Thorne was currently facing federal charges for wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and obstruction of justice.

Gabriel leaned down, kissing the top of Clara’s head as she struck the final, clear note of the song.

“That was perfect, Clara,” Gabriel whispered softly.

Clara turned her big green eyes up to look at him, her face bursting into a wide, radiant smile. “Mom said that whenever you play the white keys, the sun comes out.”

Gabriel reached into his pocket and pulled out an old, framed photograph—the yellowed picture of him and Lucia at Harvard, now carefully restored and placed in a handcrafted silver frame.

He set the frame on the music stand of the piano, right above the keys where both he and Clara could see it every single day.

“Your mother was right, sweetheart,” Gabriel said, pulling his daughter into a warm, tight hug, holding her against his chest as the warm ocean wind blew through the open doors. “The sun is finally out.”

Clara rested her head against his shoulder, her tiny hand wrapping around his thumb. “Are we going to stay here forever, Dad?”

Gabriel looked out at the blue ocean stretching into the horizon, feeling a deep, profound peace that no boardroom, no billion-dollar merger, and no skyscraper could ever offer.

“Forever, Clara,” Gabriel promised, holding his daughter close. “We’re finally home.”
