Chapter 3 - The Promise at the Gate

The afternoon rain had cleared, leaving the courtyard of Sunshine House glistening under a pale autumn sun.

Clara was sitting alone on a wooden bench beneath a faded maple tree, clutching her mother’s old photograph against her chest. She looked small, fragile, and utterly isolated among the louder, running children in the yard.

The iron gates of the courtyard opened.

Clara looked up. Her big green eyes widened as she saw Gabriel Mendes walking toward her.

He wasn't wearing his Italian suit coat. His shirt sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, his tie was gone, and his polished shoes were stained with wet leaves.

Gabriel dropped to his knees on the damp grass right in front of her bench, placing himself at eye level with the little girl.

“You came back,” Clara whispered, her small voice trembling with cautious disbelief.

“I promised you I would, didn't I?” Gabriel said gently, offering her a soft, genuine smile that felt completely foreign on his face.

Clara looked at his muddy shoes, then at his open hands. “Where is your black car? The lady in the office said important men like you don't come back twice.”

“I’m not an important man, Clara,” Gabriel said, his voice thick with emotion. “I’m just... someone who made a terrible mistake a long time ago. Someone who took far too long to find you.”

Clara reached out her small hand, her tiny fingers gently touching the silver cufflink still pinned to Gabriel’s sleeve. “Did you know my mom very well?”

Gabriel took a deep, shuddering breath, holding back the tears burning behind his eyes. “I loved your mother, Clara. She was the best thing that ever happened to me. She taught me how to laugh, how to look at the stars, and how to be a human being.”

Clara’s lower lip trembled. “Then why weren't you there when she got sick?”

The question hit Gabriel like a dagger to the heart. He didn't offer a corporate excuse. He didn't blame Julian Thorne or the legal threats that had kept Lucia silent.

“Because I was foolish, Clara,” Gabriel answered honestly, looking straight into her green eyes. “I was so busy building big glass buildings and trying to prove I was important that I didn't see what truly mattered. I let bad people keep us apart. And I will spend the rest of my life asking for your forgiveness for that.”

Catherine Morrison walked out onto the porch of the Victorian building, holding a clipboard, her face tight with concern.

“Mr. Mendes,” Catherine called out softly. “There are two men in black suits standing outside the gates. They claim to be representatives from your board of directors.”

Gabriel stood up slowly, looking toward the iron gates.

Standing on the sidewalk were two of Julian Thorne’s high-priced corporate attorneys, carrying leather briefcases and legal injunctions.

“Stay here with Catherine for a moment, sweetheart,” Gabriel told Clara gently. He walked toward the gates to face Thorne’s men.

“Mr. Mendes,” the lead attorney said smoothly through the iron bars. “Mr. Thorne has filed an emergency petition with the probate court. Given your current professional instability and the public scandals surrounding Mendes Corp, we are blocking any temporary custody or visitation requests regarding Clara Martinez until a full judicial review is conducted.”

“She is my daughter,” Gabriel said, his voice icy cold.

“She has no legal father listed on her birth certificate, sir,” the attorney replied, offering a cold, bureaucratic smile. “And without a formal paternity test—which could take months to process through the state system—you have no legal standing to remove her from state care. Mr. Thorne intends to ensure she remains in the system until your executive status is resolved.”

Gabriel felt a dark, violent impulse rise within him, but he forced it down. He knew that if he broke the law now, Thorne would use it as ammunition to strip him of his parental rights forever.

“Tell Julian,” Gabriel said, leaning close to the bars, “that he has forty-eight hours to pull his lawyers off this orphanage. If he doesn't, I won't just leave Mendes Corp. I will burn it to the ground.”
