Chapter 6 - The Sun Over Greenwich

Six months later.

It was a brilliant, warm Saturday afternoon in late August.

The high stone walls of the Moretti estate were covered in blooming green ivy and bright red roses. The dark, somber atmosphere that had once shrouded the grounds had completely vanished, replaced by the soft sounds of music, laughter, and children playing on the lawn.

In the center of the manicured grass stood a large wooden playground with swings, a slide, and a small playhouse built to resemble a miniature cottage.

Four-year-old Mia, wearing a bright yellow sundress, was running down the slide, laughing joyfully. Below her, twenty-month-old Sophia was taking confident, clumsy steps across the grass, holding a brand-new plush rabbit—complete with two firmly attached ears.

"Slow down, Mia!" Elena called out with a warm laugh, sitting at a wooden patio table under a large white umbrella.

Elena looked radiant. The dark circles under her eyes were long gone, replaced by healthy color and a soft, confident smile. She wore a floral summer dress, her dark hair shining in the sunlight.

Beside her sat Alessandro.

The mafia boss had changed. He still wore tailored clothes, and his dark eyes still carried the sharp, formidable intelligence of a man who ruled an empire. But the cold, hollow exhaustion that had once defined his face was entirely gone.

He sat with one arm casually draped over the back of Elena's chair, a cup of espresso sitting on the table before him.

Leo walked out onto the patio from the house, wearing a casual polo shirt instead of his usual tactical jacket. He handed Alessandro a folder.

"The dock shipments in Jersey arrived on schedule, Boss," Leo said with a rare, relaxed smile. "No issues. Everything is quiet."

"Good," Alessandro said, setting the folder aside without opening it. "Take the afternoon off, Leo. Go enjoy the sun."

Leo chuckled, looked over at the children playing on the grass, and nodded respectfully. "Yes, Boss."

When Leo walked away, Elena looked at Alessandro, her dark eyes filled with deep warmth.

"You didn't look at the report," Elena noted softly.

"The report can wait," Alessandro replied, turning his gaze to her. He reached out his hand, gently covering hers on the table. His touch was warm, strong, and reassuring.

Over the past six months, their bond had grown into something profound. What had started as a quiet understanding had transformed into a deep, unshakeable love—a second chance at life for two people who had both known devastating loss.

Sophia came toddling over to the table, her little arms reaching up toward Alessandro. "Daddy! Up!"

Alessandro smiled—a genuine, beautiful smile that transformed his sharp face. He leaned down, picked his daughter up effortlessly with one arm, and set her on his lap. Sophia immediately leaned her head against his chest, clutching her plush rabbit.

Mia ran over a second later, holding a small bouquet of yellow dandelions she had picked from the edge of the lawn.

"For you, Mama!" Mia declared proudly, presenting the flowers to Elena. "And for Uncle Alessandro!"

"Thank you, my brave girl," Alessandro said, reaching out with his free hand to gently ruffle Mia’s dark curls.

Mia grinned, leaning against his knee.

Alessandro looked out over the sunny lawn, holding his daughter in his lap, feeling the warmth of Elena’s hand in his, and watching Mia laugh.

He thought back to that cold, rainy midnight months ago—to the dark vault, the security camera footage, and the barefoot three-year-old who had walked into his daughter's nursery without fear.

He had thought he was installing a camera to catch a security breach.

Instead, that camera had saved his life. It had broken the iron walls he had built around his broken heart and showed him that even in the darkest night, love could find a way through the quietest hands.

Alessandro pulled Elena slightly closer, leaning down to press a gentle kiss against her forehead.

The shadows were gone. The nursery was filled with light.

And for the first time in his life, Alessandro Moretti was truly home.
