Chapter 4 - The Strike at the Gate

The power to the east wing failed instantly.
Inside the guest suite beside the nursery, Elena was folding laundry when the overhead lights went dark, plunging the room into pitch blackness.
"Mia?" Elena called out instantly, her heart slamming against her ribs.
"I'm here, Mama," Mia's tiny voice came from the corner where she was sitting on the rug with Sophia.
Outside in the hallway, heavy footsteps echoed—fast, deliberate, and metallic.
"Elena! Lock the door!" Leo’s voice roared from down the corridor, followed instantly by the deafening crack of suppressed gunfire.
Pop! Pop! Pop!
Glass shattered in the lower terrace. The sound of shouting men echoed through the stone halls.
Inside the suite, Elena panicked. She grabbed Mia with one arm and pulled Sophia out of her crib with the other, retreating into the deep walk-in closet at the back of the bedroom. She pulled a pile of heavy winter coats over the two children, pressing her hands over their mouths.
"Shh," Elena whispered, tears streaming down her face in the dark. "Be quiet, my loves. Be so quiet."
In the grand hallway, Alessandro moved through the dark like a predator born in the shadows.
He didn't wear a tactical vest. He wore his black silk shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, his firearm raised with practiced, lethal precision.
Three men in dark raincoats had breached the service door near the kitchen, wielding automatic submachine guns. They were Romanov’s elite soldiers—hired mercenaries sent to kidnap Elena and the child before the main estate guard could react.
One mercenary turned the corner toward the nursery stairs.
Alessandro stepped out from an alcove.
Crack! Crack!
Two shots. The mercenary collapsed onto the marble floor without making a sound.
Alessandro didn't pause. He vaulted over the fallen man, dropping low as a volley of bullets tore through the plaster wall above his head, showering white dust into the dark hallway.
"Hold the stairs!" a voice shouted in Russian from the lower landing.
Alessandro pulled a flash-bang grenade from Leo's tactical belt, pulled the pin with his teeth, and tossed it down the marble staircase.
BOOM!
A blinding flash of white light and a concussive shockwave shook the floorboards.
Alessandro charged down the stairs through the blinding smoke.
He fired three times, dropping two stunned mercenaries on the landing. He grabbed the third by the throat, slamming him violently against the stone wall.
"Who sent you?" Alessandro growled, pressing the hot barrel of his firearm against the man's temple.
The mercenary, bleeding from his ears from the shockwave, gasped for air. "Frank... Frank Rossi... he's at the north gate... with Romanov..."
Alessandro’s eyes turned to cold stone. He shoved the man into Leo’s arms as Leo reached the landing with four armed estate guards.
"Secure the lower floor," Alessandro ordered Leo. "Shoot anyone who isn't wearing a Moretti badge."
"Where are you going, Boss?" Leo shouted over the sound of lingering alarms.
"To finish this," Alessandro said.
He walked up the stairs toward the nursery wing. He reached the door of the guest suite, finding it intact. He knocked three times in a fast, specific rhythm.
"Elena. It's Alessandro."
The closet door inside clicked open slowly. Elena stepped out, pale, shaking, her apron torn at the shoulder, holding Mia and Sophia tightly against her chest.
When she saw Alessandro standing in the doorway—his face dusted with drywall powder, a smear of dark blood on his collar, holding a smoking weapon—she let out a ragged sob.
Mia looked up at him from her mother's arm.
"Did you catch the bad shadows?" Mia asked softly.
Alessandro set his gun into his holster. He walked across the room, stopped in front of Elena, and reached out his arms.
For the first time in fourteen months, Alessandro took his daughter Sophia into his left arm, and with his right arm, he lifted Mia off the ground, holding both children against his chest.
"The shadows are gone, little one," Alessandro said, his voice deep and raspy.

He looked at Elena, his dark eyes fiercely protective.
"Stay here with Leo," Alessandro said gently. "I have one more thing to take care of."
