Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary

By the following morning, the atmosphere inside the Ferraro mansion had completely shifted.

Luca had ordered his personal physician, Dr. Evans, to treat Clara immediately. She was moved from the small staff quarters in the basement to a sunny, spacious guest suite on the second floor of the main house.

Nora sat on the edge of the large, soft king-sized bed, swinging her tiny legs, watching her mother rest under heavy goose-down blankets. An IV drip was gently supplying Clara with fluids and medication.

"Is Mommy going to wake up soon?" Nora asked softly, looking up at the door as Luca stepped into the room.

Luca was dressed in a casual charcoal sweater and dark slacks, stripped of his usual intimidating business armor. He held a small silver tray carrying a warm bowl of soup and a mug of hot tea.

"She’s sleeping because the medicine is helping her body rest, Nora," Luca explained gently, setting the tray on a bedside table. "By tomorrow, her fever will be gone."

Nora looked at the luxurious room, the tall velvet curtains, and the soft carpet beneath her bare feet. She looked up at Luca with a mixture of awe and caution.

"Mr. Luca?"

"Yes, Nora?"

"Are we going to be thrown out now?" she asked, her small voice trembling slightly. "The loud man is gone, but... do we still have to pay for the shirt?"

Luca felt a sharp pang in his chest. He pulled up a chair and sat beside her, dropping to her eye level.

"Nora," Luca said firmly, looking straight into her innocent hazel eyes. "Listen to me carefully. Nobody is throwing you out. Nobody will ever threaten you or your mother in this house again. The shirt you were washing didn't matter. You matter."

Nora blinked, processing his words slowly. "I matter?"

"Yes," Luca said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small, wrapped wooden box tied with a gold ribbon. "And because you are a guest in my home, guests get presents."

Nora’s eyes lit up like bright stars. She reached out with her small fingers, carefully untying the gold ribbon, and opened the wooden box.

Inside sat a plush, soft brown teddy bear with a small golden crown sewn onto its head, alongside a brand-new set of watercolor paints and a thick sketchbook.

Nora gasped loudly, covering her mouth with both hands. "A bear! With a crown!"

"His name is Barnaby," Luca said, a small smile touching his lips. "He is tasked with protecting your room."

Nora grabbed the teddy bear, hugging it so tightly against her chest that her small shoulders shook. Then, without warning, she lunged forward, throwing her tiny arms around Luca’s neck, burying her face into his shoulder.

"Thank you, Mr. Luca," she whispered softly.

Luca froze. It had been years since anyone had touched him without fear or professional deference. Slowly, carefully, as if afraid he might break her, Luca raised his large arms and wrapped them around the little girl, holding her close to his heart.

At that moment, Clara stirred on the bed, her eyes fluttering open.

She watched her three-year-old daughter hugging the most powerful, feared man in the city, and tears of profound relief flowed silently down her cheeks.

"Mr. Ferraro..." Clara whispered weakly.

Luca gently loosened his grip on Nora and stood up, looking at Clara.

"Rest, Clara," Luca said softly. "Your job as a maid is over."

Clara’s heart panicked. "Sir?"

"Starting today," Luca announced, "you are the manager of the estate's arts and cultural foundation. You will have a salary four times what Harland paid you, complete health coverage, and Nora will be enrolled in the finest private preschool in Providence. This mansion is no longer your workplace. It is your home."
