Chapter 3: The Reckoning at Midnight

My father and Victoria ran out onto the snow in their pajamas, screaming at the foreman, but Marcus stood in their path, flanked by four armed security guards and a team of corporate lawyers holding official court injunctions.

From the warmth of the limousine, I watched the ultimate downfall of the people who had spent years making me feel worthless.

The lawyers handed my father a stack of documents. Even from a distance, I could see the exact moment his spirit broke. The injunction didn't just evict him from the house; it froze every single bank account tied to the Vance name. The gold watch he wore, the gaming console Julian held, the luxury cars in the garage—all of it had been purchased with funds embezzled from my mother's estate. It was a massive case of grand larceny, meticulously documented by Eleanor's legal team over the last five years, waiting for the exact moment I turned eighteen.

"They thought they could lock you out in the cold to break you," Eleanor said, gently rubbing my hands to restore circulation. "They didn't realize the cold would only make you steel, just like your mother."

With a deafening roar, the first excavator extended its massive steel arm. The crowd of onlookers—neighbors from the exclusive gated community who had come out to see the commotion—gasping as the metal teeth smashed through the second-story master bedroom. The very walls that had housed their cruelty began to crumble into splintered wood and broken glass.

Julian was crying, throwing his hands in the air as his precious gaming room collapsed. Victoria was on her knees in the snow, begging the foreman to stop, her expensive jewelry scattering into the drifts. My father could only stare in paralyzed horror as the physical manifestation of his unearned pride was systematically reduced to rubble.

"Where will they go?" I asked softly, not out of pity, but out of awe.

"To a state-funded cell, eventually," Eleanor replied without a shred of remorse. "Arthur will face trial for fraud, embezzlement, and child endangerment. As for Victoria and her son, they can find out what it truly means to survive without a roof over their heads."

She tapped the glass partition. "Drive, Marcus. Take us to the airport. We have a flight to Boston."

As the limousine pulled away into the night, the last thing I saw in the rearview mirror was the grand chandelier of the dining room crashing to the ground in a cloud of dust and snow.
