Chapter 2: The Foundations Crumble

The security chief, a towering man named Marcus, didn't hesitate. He picked up his satellite phone and dialed a single number. "Execute the asset seizure on the Aspen estate. Bring the transport team. Now."
Eleanor didn't wait for them to arrive. She shed her heavy white cashmere coat and wrapped it tightly around my shivering shoulders, lifting me effortlessly despite her age. Her hands were warm, smelling of expensive lavender and cedar. "My darling girl," she murmured, her voice a soothing balm against the biting wind. "The nightmare is over. I am so sorry I had to wait until tonight to interfere."
"The... the key," I managed to whisper, my jaw chattering so hard it ached. I pulled the small silver chain from beneath my dress.
Eleanor looked at it, and for the first time, a flicker of profound sorrow crossed her fierce eyes. "Your mother's key. It unlocks the truth he tried so hard to bury."
Before we could reach the limousine, the front door of the mansion flew open. My father stepped out onto the porch, holding a glass of scotch, a look of utter bewilderment on his face. Victoria and Julian crowded behind him, peering into the blizzard.
"Eleanor?" my father called out, his voice instantly dropping its arrogant edge, replaced by a sudden, pathetic desperation. "What are you doing here? It’s Christmas Eve! Come inside, please. We had a minor issue with Maya, she was just throwing a tantrum—"
Eleanor stopped. She didn't turn around fully, merely looking over her shoulder. The sheer aura of authority she radiated made my father freeze mid-sentence.
"Arthur," Eleanor said, her voice carrying over the howling wind like sheet ice cracking. "You always were a foolish, greedy little man. You forgot whose money bought the dirt you are standing on. You forgot that this entire estate belongs to the Vance trust—my trust."
My father’s face drained of color. "Now, wait a minute, Eleanor. The deed is in my name!"
"A forged deed your late wife, my daughter, signed under duress," Eleanor countered coldly. "The silver key my granddaughter holds unlocks the original, unedited trust provisions in the Boston vault. You have exactly thirty minutes to pack what you can carry in your hands. At midnight, the heavy machinery arrives."
"You're bluffing!" Victoria shrieked from the porch, clutching her gold watch. "You can't just tear down a ten-million-dollar home! It’s illegal!"
"I am Eleanor Vance," my grandmother replied, stepping into the warmth of the limousine and pulling me in beside her. "I don't bluff. I dictate."
The heavy armored door slammed shut, cutting off their screams. Inside, the leather seats were heated, and a hot cup of tea was instantly placed in my hands. As the limousine rolled to the edge of the property, I looked out the tinted window.

The clock on the dashboard clicked to 12:00 a.m.
Suddenly, the private road was flooded with blinding yellow lights. Three massive industrial excavators and a fleet of black SUVs tore through the snow, bearing down on the mansion like a mechanical army.
