Chapter 5 - The Ledger Balanced

He didn't fight them. When a man whose entire life is built on illusions finally hits reality, the collapse is absolute. As they locked the cuffs around his wrists and read him his rights, he looked back at me one last time.

There was no love in his eyes. Only a toxic, venomous hatred.

"You were always a cold, calculating little bitch," he spat, dropping the grieving father act forever.

I looked at the man who had traded his family's lives for a balanced checkbook, feeling absolutely nothing for him.

As the officers marched him out of the room, Detective Ortiz lingered for a moment. She looked at the spreadsheets scattered across the table, then up at me, a genuine smile touching her lips.

"You did good, kid," she said softly. "Your mother would be proud."

"My mother knew exactly who she raised," I replied, looking out the window at the clear, blue sky.

The smell of smoke was finally gone. The ledger was balanced. And for the first time since the fire, I took a deep, painless breath, entirely in control of my own life.
