Chapter 2 - The Digital Ashes

Two days later, my father arranged for me to be transferred to a private rehabilitation facility. He wanted me comfortable, isolated, and entirely dependent on him.
He didn't know that Detective Ortiz was the one who personally packed my belongings from the charred remains of my apartment across town. Tucked inside the false bottom of a decorative jewelry box was the encrypted flash drive my mother had given me two weeks prior. Ortiz handed it to me wrapped inside a folded newspaper during a "routine police follow-up."
That night, under the guise of resting, I opened my secure laptop.
My father called my profession playing with meaningless spreadsheets. He thought forensic accounting was just glorified bookkeeping. He had no idea that I could read a financial ledger the way a predator reads tracks in the mud.
I plugged the drive in. The encryption was heavily layered, but my mother had left me the cipher in her final words: follow the money. The password was her favorite quote about investments, stripped of vowels.
The files decrypted, and the true motive behind my mother's murder illuminated my darkened room.
My father hadn't just taken out an eight-million-dollar life insurance policy. He had spent the last three years systematically embezzling nearly fifteen million dollars from the private equity firm he managed. His offshore accounts were draining, his shell companies were collapsing, and a massive federal audit of his firm was scheduled for the end of the month.
He was broke, desperate, and facing federal prison. The insurance payout wasn't just greed—it was his only lifeline. He killed my mother to balance his fraudulent books.

The ledger was closed. Now, it was time to collect the debt.
