Chapter 5 - The Mastermind Unveiled

The letter was dated two weeks before Richard Whitaker’s fatal heart attack.

Nolan’s hands shook so violently that Paige had to sit beside him, wrapping her arms around his shoulder to steady him as they read the words together:

"My dearest Nolan,

If you are reading this, it means I am no longer with you, and my fears regarding your mother, Eleanor, and Arthur Mercer have come to pass.

For twenty years, I have stayed silent about the true nature of the Whitaker family fortune. The empire you believe I built was not built on real estate alone. Thirty years ago, Arthur Mercer and your mother orchestrated an illegal land-grab scheme in Northern Virginia that ruined dozens of local families. I spent the last decade of my life trying to quietly undo the damage and set up a secret foundation to repay those victims.

Nolan, your mother knows that the foundation exists. She knows that fifty percent of the Whitaker estate is legally bound to be transferred to an independent charitable trust upon your thirty-fifth birthday.

The only way Eleanor and Arthur Mercer can stop this transfer is if you marry Sloane Mercer before your thirtieth birthday. Their prenuptial agreement contains a hidden clause that merges the Whitaker trust directly into the Mercer Holdings Corporation, effectively burying my secret foundation forever and giving Arthur Mercer total control of our family wealth.

Do not let them dictate your life, Nolan. Do not marry into the Mercer family. Find a woman who loves you for your heart, not your name. Build a life based on truth, not the lies your mother and Arthur have constructed around you.

With all my love, Your Father, Richard."

Silence hung in the room, heavy and suffocating.

Nolan stared at the letter, the entire puzzle of his life suddenly clicking into place with terrifying, crystal-clear perfection.

His mother hadn't just separated him from Paige because Paige was a "distraction."

She and Arthur Mercer had engineered his entire life—his engagement to Sloane, his political trajectory, the forced removal of Paige—for one single, monstrous reason: Greed.

They needed Nolan to marry Sloane before his thirtieth birthday—which was only three weeks away—to seal the legal loop-hole and absorb his father’s secret foundation into their corporate empire.

"They used me," Nolan whispered, his voice dark, hollow, and filled with a dangerous, terrible rage. "They used me my entire life."

Paige held him tightly, her tears falling onto his shoulder. "Nolan... what are you going to do?"

Nolan slowly folded his father’s letter, sliding it carefully back into the thick envelope.

He looked at Paige, his pale gray eyes burning with an unshakeable, fierce determination.

"Tomorrow morning at ten o'clock, Arthur Mercer and my mother are holding a major press conference at the National Press Club to announce my Senate candidacy and my wedding to Sloane," Nolan said, his voice as cold as ice.

Paige gasped softly. "Nolan..."

May you like

Nolan took Paige’s face in his hands, kissing her lips with a deep, passionate intensity that made four years of pain vanish in a single second.

"They stole four years of our lives, Paige," Nolan said, looking deeply into her eyes. "They made my children grow up without a father. Tomorrow... I am going to give them the press conference they deserve."
