Chapter 2 - The Shadows of the Past

The Mercer family estate in Kalorama sat behind high brick walls and wrought-iron security gates, an imposing French-style manor that had hosted senators, ambassadors, and presidents for half a century.

Inside the private study, the air was heavy with the scent of aged scotch and leather-bound books.

Nolan stood near the grand marble fireplace, refusing to sit in the leather armchair Arthur had offered him. He had removed his tie, his dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his hands clenching and unclenching into tight fists.

Sloane sat on the velvet sofa, her arms crossed tightly, her face red with humiliated anger. "It was embarrassing, Dad! Absolute chaos! Nolan chased some random street woman with a stroller and screamed at her in broad daylight! Do you have any idea what The Washington Post gossip column will do with this if someone filmed it?!"

"Shut up, Sloane!" Nolan snapped, his voice ringing like a iron bell through the quiet room.

"Nolan!" Arthur Mercer warned, sitting behind his massive mahogany desk, his posture rigid. "You will not speak to my daughter in that tone in my house."

"I don't give a damn about your house, Arthur, and I don't give a damn about the seating chart at the Willard!" Nolan yelled, stepping toward the desk, slamming both palms down onto the polished wood. "Four years ago, you and my mother told me that Paige Ellison left town because she took a two-hundred-thousand-dollar payout from my family's trust fund to walk away from me! You showed me a signed non-disclosure agreement with her signature on it!"

Arthur Mercer didn't flinch. His expression remained smooth, polished, and completely devoid of emotion. "That was four years ago, Nolan. You were twenty-six years old, running a mid-level tech start-up, and engaged in a reckless affair with a girl who had no background, no connections, and no place in the future your mother and I had envisioned for you."

"She was pregnant!" Nolan roared, the truth breaking through his heart with devastating force. "She didn't take the money! She was pregnant with my children! Triplets!"

"You don't know that," Sloane interjected sharply, standing up from the sofa. "Nolan, be reasonable! You saw a woman with three kids in a park! Thousands of people have gray eyes! She probably found some rich guy in Maine, had kids, and happened to be visiting D.C.! You're manufacturing an insane conspiracy because you're stressed about our wedding!"

Nolan turned to look at Sloane, seeing her clearly for the first time in two years.

He didn't see the woman he loved. He saw the cold, hyper-calculating ambition of the Mercer family. His engagement to Sloane had been arranged by his mother, Eleanor Whitaker, and Arthur Mercer to merge the Whitaker Real Estate empire with the Mercer political lobby. It was a business merger disguised as a romance.

"My mother lied to me," Nolan whispered, his voice dangerously low. "And you helped her."

Arthur Mercer slowly stood up, smoothing his tailored suit jacket. "Nolan, your mother did what any protecting parent would do for an heir to a billion-dollar legacy. Paige Ellison was a distraction. If she had children, that is her private matter. Your future is here, with Sloane, with the merger, and with the Senate campaign we are launching for you next spring."

Nolan let out a bitter, dark laugh.

"My future was stolen from me four years ago," Nolan said, taking a step backward toward the door. "And I swear to God, Arthur... if I find out that you or my mother harmed her or forced her out of this city, there won't be a campaign. There won't be a merger. I will burn every single contract to the ground."

"Nolan! If you walk out that door, the wedding is off!" Sloane screamed, tears of rage finally spilling over her mascara. "My family will pull every dollar of political funding from your firm! You'll be ruined!"

Nolan didn't even stop. He pulled open the heavy oak door, stepping out into the grand hallway, and slammed it shut behind him.

He pulled out his cell phone, his fingers flying across the screen as he dialed a private number he hadn't called in three years.

The line rang twice before a deep, grizzled voice answered.

"Nolan? I haven't heard from you since the acquisition deal in Boston. What's wrong?"

"Marcus," Nolan said, his voice shaking with absolute resolve. "I need your private investigative team in D.C. within two hours. I need to track a yellow taxi that picked up a woman and a triple stroller at the south corner of Dupont Circle at 2:15 p.m. today."

"Consider it done. Who is the woman?"

Nolan swallowed hard, a lump forming in his throat. "Paige Ellison. Find out where she’s staying, Marcus. Find out everything."
