Chapter 5 - The Judgment

Thursday morning arrived under a heavy grey sky, blanketed by a quiet, persistent rain that washed over the streets of Fairmont.

In Courtroom 3B, the atmosphere was thick with anticipation. The gallery, which had been nearly empty on Monday, was now packed with local journalists, legal observers, and representatives from the business community.

Daniel Bennett sat at the defense table.

He looked like a ghost of the man who had walked into the room three days earlier. His immaculate charcoal suit was rumpled, his hair unwashed, and deep dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes. His attorney, Richard Vance, sat beside him, staring silently at a stack of legal papers, offering no comforting words or strategic whispers.

Across the aisle, the plaintiff’s table was occupied by Marissa Hale and her associate.

Claire’s chair was empty.

Judge Reeves took the bench at precisely nine o'clock. He arranged his papers, looked down at the empty seat at the plaintiff’s table, and then looked at Marissa.

“Ms. Hale, where is your client?” Judge Reeves asked.

Marissa stood up, a proud, radiant smile lighting up her face. “Your Honor, my client, Claire Bennett, gave birth to a healthy seven-pound baby boy, Leo Daniel Bennett, at three o'clock this morning at Fairmont Memorial Hospital. Mother and baby are both resting comfortably and doing exceptionally well.”

A soft murmur of congratulations swept through the gallery.

Daniel’s head snapped up. He stared at the empty chair, his mouth opening slightly. A son. He had a son born three hours ago, and he hadn't been there. He hadn't even known she was in labor. The realization hit him like a physical blow, stripping away the last remaining layers of his arrogant defense.

Judge Reeves smiled—the first genuine smile anyone had seen on his face all week. “Please convey the court’s warm congratulations to Mrs. Bennett. Now, let us proceed to the matter of the final decree.”

Judge Reeves adjusted his glasses and picked up a heavy, thirty-page document.

“Over the last seventy-two hours,” Judge Reeves began, his voice echoing authoritatively through the room, “this court has reviewed extensive evidence regarding the financial conduct and personal actions of the defendant, Daniel Bennett. The forensic audit conducted by the court-appointed receiver reveals an intentional, systematic pattern of fraud designed to deprive the plaintiff of her lawful share of marital assets.”

Judge Reeves looked directly at Daniel, his gaze stern and unforgiving.

“Furthermore, the court has received the preliminary report from Child Protective Services and reviewed audio recordings verified by state law enforcement. The defendant’s actions in coercing his six-year-old daughter to provide false testimony regarding child abuse represent a monstrous abuse of parental authority and a direct attack on the integrity of this judicial system.”

Daniel slumped forward, resting his head in his hands. Beside him, Vance simply lowered his eyes.

“Therefore,” Judge Reeves declared, slamming his hand down on the bench, “the court orders the following: First, the marital settlement agreement signed by the plaintiff under duress is voided in its entirety. Second, under the provisions of state marital fraud statutes, the court awards the plaintiff, Claire Bennett, one hundred percent ownership of the residential property, all personal accounts, and the entirety of the defendant’s equity interest in Cole & Bennett LLC, including the Oakridge Plaza development.”

Gasps rang out across the gallery. Journalists began scribbling frantically on their pads.

“Third,” Judge Reeves continued, “sole legal and physical custody of the minor child, Sophie Bennett, is awarded permanently to Claire Bennett. The defendant, Daniel Bennett, is granted no visitation rights at this time. Any future application for supervised visitation will require completion of a twenty-four-month inpatient psychological rehabilitation program and explicit approval from the child’s court-appointed guardian ad litem.”

Judge Reeves picked up his gavel.

“Finally, with respect to the criminal warrants issued by the District County Attorney...”

The side doors of the courtroom opened. Two uniformed county sheriffs stepped into the well of the court, handcuffs ready in their hands.

“This court is adjourned,” Judge Reeves said, slamming the gavel down with finality.

The officers walked directly to the defense table. “Daniel Bennett, stand up and place your hands behind your back.”

Daniel stood up mechanically. His hands shook violently as the cold steel cuffs clicked around his wrists. He looked around the courtroom—at the flashing cameras of the reporters in the gallery, at the stern face of the judge, at the empty chair where Claire should have been sitting.

He had tried to take everything from her—her home, her money, her reputation, and her daughter. In his blind, arrogant pursuit of absolute control, he had handed her his empire and marched himself straight into a prison cell.

As the officers led Daniel away in chains down the central aisle, the gallery parted in silent judgment. The golden boy of Fairmont commercial real estate was gone, replaced by a disgraced felon heading into the dark.
