Chapter 4 - The Tides Turn

By Wednesday afternoon, the atmosphere in Fairmont had shifted entirely.

The news of Daniel Bennett’s impending legal disaster had spread to his primary business partners. Thomas Cole, anxious to distance his bank from a high-profile federal fraud investigation, held an emergency press conference announcing that First Commerce Bank was severing all commercial ties with Cole & Bennett LLC.

Vanessa Cole was spotted by local reporters leaving her apartment building carrying three suitcases, refusing to answer questions about her involvement in the offshore entities.

Inside the quiet guesthouse, Claire sat on the sunlit porch, watching Sophie play with a wooden dollhouse Marissa’s sister had provided. The color had returned to Sophie’s cheeks, and for the first time in months, the frantic, nervous watchfulness that had plagued the little girl was gone.

She laughed freely as she arranged tiny wooden chairs, completely unaware of the storm raging across the city.

Claire stroked her stomach, feeling a sudden, sharp contraction. She paused, catching her breath, waiting for the tightness to ease.

Mrs. Gable stepped out onto the porch carrying a tray of iced tea. She noticed Claire’s posture immediately. “Claire? Are you alright, dear?”

“Just Braxton Hicks, I think,” Claire said, forcing a smile as the contraction released its grip. “The baby has been very active today.”

“Well, he knows his mama is fighting for him,” Mrs. Gable said warmly, setting the tray down. “I spoke to the CPS caseworker thirty minutes ago, Claire. She finished her preliminary interview with Sophie. She said Sophie’s statements were completely consistent, and she’s recommending that Daniel’s visitation rights remain fully suspended until a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation is completed.”

Claire closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. “Thank God.”

“You saved that little girl, Claire,” Mrs. Gable said softly, placing a warm hand on Claire’s shoulder. “If you had given up and walked away, Daniel would have spent the next ten years breaking her spirit until she became just like him. You stayed and swallowed his poison so she could have a chance.”

“I didn't do it alone,” Claire said, looking at Mrs. Gable with deep gratitude. “If you hadn't brought her to the courthouse...”

“I did what any decent human being would do,” Mrs. Gable replied fiercely. “Now, you need to rest. Tomorrow is the big day.”

At six o'clock that evening, Marissa arrived at the guesthouse carrying a stack of revised court documents and a pizza box for Sophie.

“The District Attorney officially filed charges two hours ago,” Marissa announced, setting the box on the kitchen island. “Subornation of perjury, falsifying evidence, and emotional child abuse. A warrant for Daniel’s arrest has been signed, but Judge Reeves agreed to let him surrender voluntarily at the conclusion of tomorrow’s hearing.”

Claire looked up from her tea. “He’s going to be arrested in the courtroom?”

“Right after the property division order is read,” Marissa confirmed. “Our audit is complete, Claire. We proved that Daniel systematically funneled marital funds into Cole & Bennett LLC over an eighteen-month period. Under Kansas law, when a spouse fraudulently dissipates marital assets, the court can award up to one hundred percent of those assets to the injured spouse to make them whole.”

“What does that mean for Oakridge Plaza?” Claire asked.

“It means,” Marissa smiled broadly, “that as of tomorrow afternoon, you will be the majority owner of Oakridge Plaza. Daniel’s shares are being transferred directly into a trust created for you and the children. You won't just be financially secure, Claire. You’re going to be one of the most prominent property owners in the county.”

Claire sat in silence, processing the magnitude of the turn of events.

Four days ago, she was prepared to surrender her home, her savings, her cars, and her financial independence just to keep Daniel from taking Sophie. She had felt completely powerless, broken by months of psychological warfare. Now, the very assets Daniel had tried so ruthlessly to steal were being placed into her hands to secure her children's future.

Suddenly, another sharp contraction rippled through Claire’s abdomen. This one was deeper, stronger, causing her to gasp and grip the edge of the kitchen counter.

Marissa’s smile vanished instantly. “Claire?”

Claire looked down. A small pool of water was expanding across the hardwood floor around her shoes.

May you like

“Marissa...” Claire gasped, holding her breath through the wave of pressure. “I don't think these are Braxton Hicks.”

Marissa dropped her binder, her eyes wide with sudden panic. “Mrs. Gable! Get the bags! The baby is coming!”
