Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Trap

The grand boardroom on the 50th floor of Callahan Global Holdings was packed to capacity. Directors in dark suits sat around the thirty-foot mahogany table, whispering nervously as dozens of news cameras lined the back wall.

At the head of the table sat Victor Callahan, looking immaculate despite the rumors surrounding his forced exit earlier that week. He had used his remaining influence to call the meeting, intending to vote Ethan out as CEO and secure the five-billion-dollar Sterling Group merger once and for all.

"Gentlemen, please take your seats," Victor announced, tapping his gavel on the table. "We are here today to address the erratic behavior of my son, Ethan, and to vote on his immediate removal from the executive committee due to gross instability."

The double doors at the back of the boardroom swung open.

Ethan walked in, looking regal and formidable in a charcoal-three-piece suit. But he wasn't alone.

I walked in right beside him, wearing a sharp navy suit Ethan had purchased for me, holding two-year-old Lily in my arms. Behind us walked three senior officials from the Chicago Police Department and the District Attorney.

Victor’s face darkened instantly. "Ethan, this is a private board meeting! Security, remove this woman and her child immediately!"

"They stay, Victor," Ethan said, his voice booming across the silent room. "Because the person holding twenty-five percent of voting stock in this room isn't you. It’s my niece, Lily Callahan."

Gasps erupted across the room. Cameras flashed rapidly as reporters scrambled to get photos of the little girl.

"Nonsense!" Victor sneered, standing up and slamming his hands on the table. "Caleb died without issue! That child is an illegitimate fraud brought here to destabilize this company!"

"Is that so?" Ethan calmly pulled a document from his leather briefcase and held it up for the cameras to see. "This is a certified DNA report conducted by the State Department of Forensic Science, comparing Lily’s DNA to Caleb’s original medical records. The match is 99.9%."

Victor’s jaw tightened, but he forced a cold laugh. "Even if she is his child, Caleb’s shares reverted to the main corporate treasury upon his death two years ago according to the founder's charter!"

"They would have," I spoke up, my voice ringing clear and strong across the room as I stepped forward. "If Caleb hadn't legally married me in a small chapel three weeks before he disappeared."

I pulled a small, worn piece of paper from my pocket—our marriage certificate, signed and stamped by the county clerk—and placed it on the center of the boardroom table.

"Caleb knew your father was coming for him," I said, looking Victor straight in the eye. "He married me under his real name to ensure that whatever happened to him, his legacy would protect his child. Lily isn't just an heir, Mr. Callahan. She is the sole owner of Caleb’s entire estate—and I am her legal guardian."
